temperature and fuel gauge quit

Hi everyone.
Both my gauges started acting funny awhile ago, either both working or both doing nothing. Now all they do is sit there. I'd like to get them working again and read a post about the voltage regulator being a possible culprit. However I also read one that said when the regulator goes bad you get abnormally high or low readings rather than no reading at all.
What do you think? Where should I start?
