Needs to be rebuilt and new clutch put in

See here

http://nissandiesel.dyndns.org/viewtopic.php?t=1474

been there, done that

If the re builder can keep your old pinion and it's not messed up then do so. Otherwise you could end up with the same issue that I had for a while till it wears in.
Or
Do what I did and "relieve" the back side of the new pinion gear with a die grinder.

Good luck

Not sure about the part number from NAPA but I think there is a listing for it on this site someplace, and I even think you can go on to NAPA .com and find it there.

As for what better

There is a great debate about that.

I know on my SD25 I didn't think that I could put a DD starter in where the reduction one was. Something about the oil line for the vacuum pump but cant recall exactly.
I know it was pretty tight for the gr one. The DD one I think is just a titch longer.

Good Luck

You know, Paul... If you weren't here to answer some of this stuff, not much would ever get done!

The DD for a SD22 is (or was) available through Oreillys.

Here is a current Oreillys link for a SD22 starter.

That actually looks like the GR model.

The link is to a GR. I did say current Oreillys link (above).
It is to the starter kept in stock.
I will try to relocate the DD i ordered.

EDIT: I found the DD info. From Oreillys.
My old thread listed it as Beck/Arnley 187-0354. When i entered it into the search on their site i got this http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... d=187-0354

The starter thread from 2010.

I have never really noticed a difference between the two starters other than the DD is harder to get in there.
Which one is supposed to be the best, the one that will turn the engine the fastest I expect, but if the engine is in working order, how would one ever find out.
The GR starters are easier to find though.

I tend to like the GR starters, but they both seem to work OK. I wouldn't kick either one out of my shop ;)

Just getting caught up on this thread, so I'm a "day late and a dollar short"...but if anyone does order the starter from O'Reilly's, they have both a gear reduction and a none gear reduction model. Over the years I've gone through three of them and they have a lifetime warranty, but every time I return one to O'Reilly's I seem to get a different version.

Oreillys only shelf stocks the GR.
For the DD they also charge you the shipping. (Something about non-stock items and weight that they can get for you.)
