I got 2 turbos rebuilt by the local agent for the cost of parts[carton of beer]

1 LD20 garret with the leading edge blade missing.it had no engine damage and was in use when i removed it.a quick test found it to be in fine working order and balanced.the compressor wheel was replaced and front seal.they dynamically balanced and reasembled.

2 SR20ET ceramic turbo.removed from a daily driven car for an upgrade in good order.quick test found it to be stuffed.beadblast housing and lineboreshaft and bearings and balance.

at work we have a ford transit with a KKK.when diving along it apeard that the turbo had let go filling the exhaust with oil.hot smokey oil.

a reconditioner took the turbo away and reconditioned it.the new turbo ran for a few minutes then oil ran out the front through a baffel plate desighned to stop oil getting into the compressor housing.we then tested 2 other turbos-the drain back system-adjusted the oil flow.intake pressures.
we removed the turbo core and operated it for a short time as an NA.

when the experts abandoned the project I removed the head and found a head bolt boundup with sealer and a compression track to the oil gallery feed to the turbo.the aerated oil blocked up the turbo drain.

These are just my observations from my experiences in the field.

I drove one car with the compressor rattling around for a year and, when I tore it down to fit a P99 head, I found zero damage to the bores or pistons.

A few years later, on another 280zx turbo, I drove it 8 months and found zero damage when I pulled it apart to fit flattops so I could enjoy good off boost response.

I've never seen any damage from the aluminum fins of the compressor wheel in my experience as a z car specialist (datsun dynamics and Z shop of miami) or my experience as a nissan master technician.

I guess the nut can back off but I've never seen it after at least 100 if not 200 turbo replacements over the last 19 years.

[Interesting tone-down on the edit; I read the un-edited version first. I appreciate your rewrite.]

You are talking gassers; diesels have no (nearly none) combustion chamber clearance. There is no "dish" around the valves. Any solid material that makes it into the CC and is larger than .060 becomes embedded into the piston. I've seen this many times.

I recently read some online comments by a couple of kiwis out in New Zealand who have been turbo'ing an LD28 or two. Apparently they melted/holed a few pistons using the 280ZX turbo exhaust manifold. Maybe the airways are narrower on the gas model, but they fixed the problem by making a "connecting pipe" between the T3 turbo flange and the diesel manifold.

That's what I'm doing on the diesel Z anyway. Screw that puny gas turbo manifold. I know for sure that the LD28 exhaust outlets are fatter than 280ZX non-turbo outlets...I had to make a custom down-pipe to fit a good three-inch straight pipe on my diesel manifold.

this type of stuff is common practice.in australia LD28 are not common but untill recent times you could get a manifold made for less the week wages.

i had extractors made for a FWD CD20 in a RWD i cut the ports profile and the manndrel bent pipes cost $200.

most of the people that do this stuff have 2 heads so its rare to find it on the net.

Lot of LD28 in 70's holden,80's falcons and patrols.these have lots of room so its common to see an engine pipe returning to feed the turbo.

Hi lux and land cruises are more commonly converted to turbo by the back yard boys.

Here is that forum discussion about breaking pistons using the gas turbo manifold on an LD28. It's from Zcar.com, and the whole thing is quite interesting.
