Flywheel Question

#1

Post by moose-tek »

In my search for the elusive LD28 I have found a possible candidate engine.

I am playing with the idea of a diesel swap into a 280z.

The engine that I found is still in what I believe to be the original car. Speedo clocks in at 174xxx miles. Radiator has been scavenged and the Injector Pump is in the back seat. The injector lines have been piled in a corner of the engine bay and have corrosion on the connecting ends. Engine looks fairly complete and all.

My question is... Since the car has an automatic transmission, will it have a proper flywheel, if any, to mate up to a 5sp transmission?

No. You will need the specific LD28 MT flywheel (and a couple other parts in there) to mate it to a MT. The AT one won't work.

I may have typed the part Nos. for this somewhere in these forums.

Looking at the Parts Catalogue:

Shield for the AT & MT is the same up to Jun-82: 30411-V0711, about $55 w/shipping.
Jul-82 onward, the MT gets a different shield (30411-V0700, same price); the AT keeps using the old one.

Flywheel for MT has three different part Nos., but the last one supercedes both the others, in Jan-83: 12310-28L01, about $300 with shipping.

The flexplate/flywheel/spacer combo for the AT is quite different than the MT. Nissan calls the flexplate a flywheel, and a separate plate the ring gear, which Nissan calls a "drive plate".

AT flywheel is 12311-W1755, $283 bare. The "ring gear" + spacer 12331-W2510 is $150. Interestingly, the ring gear alone (without the "drive plate") is available for the AT version (12312-V0700), $100. But you can't buy the bare ring gear for the MT flywheel. Be gentle to you ring gear, or you'll have to buy the $300 flywheel!

The bolts that mount the flywheel to the crank are the same for all (MT & AT).

[later]

The MT flywheel has three part Nos. Each later one supercedes the previous, so if you order a new flywheel you'd order the last number.
