Broken sd-22 - engine replacement with sd-25??

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Broken sd-22 - engine replacement with sd-25??

#1

Post by dayle_bct »

Hi all

This is my first post and my first experience of diesel engines... hoping for some help!

We recently bought a 1980 nissan urvan and unfortunately the sd-22 engine broke and is unsalvagable! The head unit is too damaged (after finding the head gasket and one of the cylinders was gone too).

In any case, we are now looking for a replacement engine. We're in Brisbane Australia, and it seems the sd-22 engine is not overly common here. So we have been offered an sd-25 engine but weren't sure if we would need to upgrade the gearbox from 4 to 5-speed with this increase in engine size??

Also, we were also suggested to consider a td-27 as a replacement but we would apparently need new engine mounts and would definitely need a new gearbox.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Cheers
