SD-22 Bottom End View

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

SD-22 Bottom End View

This is the SD22 bottom end. When fitting new bearings, BE SURE you get the bearing set for the three main SD22. The main bearings have the same diameter for the SDxx four cylinder engines.

BUT ...

There seems to be a pervasive mis-cataloging that says 1980-1986 SD22 have 5 mains ... which they do not. The SD22 has only three mains.

The SD23 and SD25 have 5 mains with the same journal diameter as the SD22 but they are about 1/4" narrower.

It seems the workaround to get the right bearing set for your 3 main SD22 is to specify a pre 1980 SD22.

Sealed Power & Clevite do have the correct three main bearing shell kit if ... you ask for any year SD22 that is PRE 1980. Where all cataloging falls apart is in listing POST 1980 SD22 engines as having five mains.

The correct Sealed Power number is 6765M while the Clevite number is MS1118P.

I was crusing Ebay today and saw this...

Which seems to support your information. Clevite has the info wrong.

There are 10 shells in that box. There are 5 mains in SD23 & SD25 engines. To get the right shells from Clevite, request bearings to fit pre 1980 SD22. The 3 main SD22 shells are quite a bit wider.

Al can tell you more in detail.

Anybody know if the SD33 main brgs are the same as an SD22's? I'm looking at an eBay auction for a set of SD33 brgs. for use in an SD22.

You guys are saying that the SD22 was ONLY fitted with 3 main bearings. But here I have a 1984 SD22 from a 720 truck in my Mazda B2000 '87 truck. It says SD22 on the block and on the valve cover.
What do you say about that?
