SD25 Inline IP / SD25 VE IP / TD27t FAQ

ok so recently I picked up another diesel which did run... last year I fixed it for a local who drove it until there was nothing left I guess. compression test says 300psi.... so it's not going far. So I just thought since nobody sees the sd25 apparently, and not likely have both engines for pictures so i will post pictures and notes that follow. sorry for the varrying picture quality as they are different years and camera's etc. For those that it may also apply the sd23 should fit into this area also as they shared the same block and many parts.

i randomly stumbled on rebuild info for:
-injection pump section FSM for the sd motors - http://www.4x4.ee/docs/nissan-SD-diesel ... d-3of3.pdf
-Cooling and lubrication FSM section - http://www.4x4.ee/docs/nissan-SD-diesel ... d-2of3.pdf
-General Information/ maintenance/ engine section of FSM - http://www.4x4.ee/docs/nissan-SD-diesel ... d-1of3.pdf

first off the 86 nissan 720 pickup with inline injection. VIN - JN6JD06S4FW000636 if im reading it correctly

here are the inline IP's pump info

now for the ve injection

things to notice:
1. oil filter and cooler housing are different allowing coolant passage to cold start device (csd) (wax pellet system similar to a thermostat but controlling cold start throttle linkage position)

2. power steering pump and bracket and no engine mounted reservoir

3. motor mounts are cast units not welded steel

4. air filter box on 720 has mounted baffle box, d21 is valve cover mounted

5. exhaust manifold is completely different shape and exit flange

6. intake has threaded section for air heater (720 uses dropping resistor by passenger headlight)

7. oil pan is single drain

8. starter (gear reduction on 720 over direct drive) (note gear reduction starter is longer and may not fit with d21 cast mounts)

9. front injection pump drive cover

10. water pump shaft is .25 inch longer on ve (don't quote me on that but water pump for 720 was .25in to short and water pump pulley hits housing)

11. transmission tail housing is completely different

12. fuel filter housing (d21 uses dual filter with heater and primer pump in one)(720 fuel primer is injection pump mounted)

13. cold start system (720 electric on/off/coldstart) (d21 electric fuel solenoid and csd linkage bumper)

14. injection pump rear cover (bolt up is 3 bolt on ve and 4 bolts on inline injection)

15.main drive pulley (ve is dampened with rubber and 2 belt, while other is 3 belt and solid steel)

16. alternator is interchangeable from both sd25's and td27 however the d21 body trucks have round plug and 60amp output while the 720 body has a "T" shaped connector and is 55amp. Also the vacuum pumps are different. The td27 and sd25 ve have the same vacuum pump however the oil pressure line on td27 in banjo and the sd25 is NPT. The td27pump banjo makes clearance for the turbo. I have installed the 720 alternator on the ve sd25 and it works but motor mounts make for clearance issues with the oil pressure and return lines, you will also need to jerry rig the plug.

17. vacuum pump (size/number of outlets is different but mounting appears to be the same as the td27t and the ve alternator, shaft length into the pump and spline appear similar never tried swapping)

18. the 720 has a torque damper attached to the transmission

19. td27 and sd25 VE both appear to have the same 3 bolt injection pump and mounting just has boost compensation

SO I will make a general note... after disassembling both types of sd25. it appears everything that bolts to the block is different but the lower oil block housing and oil cooler assembly that bolts into the block, the aluminium timing cover, valve cover, thermostat housing. The injectors are possibly the same

If you want more photo's of the VE diesel d21 look at thread here http://nissandiesel.dyndns.org/viewtopic.php?t=2923

VIN - JN6JD12S9HW000291

and for the reference sake here is the VE injection pump numbers. This is a rotary injection pump not turbo compensated

if you look close you can see previous owner had water pump pulley spaced out with washers to allow for pulley clearance. This is not correct as the center of the water pump shaft centers the w/p pulley. by spacing the pulley out it will increase the load on pulley studs and likely cause belt slip issues

heres a couple pics of the td27t terrano (pathfinder) that I have 3spd w/OD auto, 4.66 gears, turbo 2.7 with altitude/boost compensation VE rotary injection pump. This has no maf or electronic injection timing that I can tell. It does have throttle position switch, fuel shut off solenoid, and a second 1 wire solenoid.

I also wanted to mention along with the alternator and plug being the same from both d21, td27 and sd25. I also have swapped glow plug relays and they are the same, however the datsun 720 relays were completely different. So as it would appear electronic wise the d21 vehicles (pickup, pathfinder, navara, terrano) share commonality. Where as the datsun/nissan 720 must be more proprietary to the older vehicles

VIN - WBYD21030319 (japanese look up only)

if you look between the steering shaft area you can see the turbo injection pump numbers for td27t VE injection

turbo compensated injection pump numbers
line 1: 16700-80G09
line 2: 104740-7132
again sd25 ve and td27t appear to have same injection pump, pump mounting position, and bolt pattern. They may be interchangeable!!!

all prices above are in CAD and the total cost of all the parts. many parts are individually listed numbers so your price may be different.

new cylinder liners are available from tieken and seem to do ok.
wrist pin bushings I'm getting the machinist to find if possible

I can order these parts for anyone if they cannot order them themselves.

I have all the numbers for the hoses and thermostat etc also. ill see if i can sort out what number is what later

heres a couple shots of the alternators I had off. I have the 720 alternator off also so I should take some pics and measure the rear shaft.

Image
on the right is the td27t alternator and on the left is the sd25 VE (d21)
-both vacuum pumps appear to be the same minus how the oil feed lines are attached.
-get a decent shot of the round edge rectangular alternator plug

Image
td27t on bottom and sd25 ve on top

here are some shots of the above listed parts that are still currently orderable

its crappy and raining today plus my shoulder is still healing from surgery so I thought Id type out some engine specs for the sd25. since some people may not find the pdf's online etc. this will make its quick reference for anyone. I did my best to proof read all my typing! If anyone sees mistakes please correct them or INFORM ME!

things to note: majority of rebuild info that follows sd25 also follows sd23 minus 4.2mm difference in rod length specs and 46mm crank throw instead of 50mm like sd22,sd25,sd33.

Most excellent and thanks for posting all that.

I am wondering if you have a picture of the fuel heater that was used on the D21. I see the fuel strainer that you have posted for the 27 and mine looks very much like that only is a double wide unit that fits to the fire wall. The water trap is on one side and the heater fits into the top of it. The primer pump and filter is next to it.
The heater quit working a couple years ago and I have had it apart and the heater element is replaceable but don't know the part number to look up/search .

Thanks

best i can do for the filter assembly. maybe there is a part number on the heater somewhere?

filter - 16403-09W0A
Filter - 16405-10g03
upper filter o-ring - 16406-18g01 -? may or may not be correct
water level sender - 16412-10g00 - not in production
fuel temp sender - 16412-10g06 - not in production

Thanks Mr.
I have those pics and even have a spare water trap etc. Finding the heater however has been a quest.
Looked at a Kubota part I thought would work but too much modification needed.

I can't say I've really paid any attention to fuel filter assemblies when I service machines. But I don't recall seeing many fuel warmer/heaters on anything else. Do you believe this would help much given up here winter diesel is used? I figured it might help filter flow/seperation slightly but can't figure out the theory behind it. unless its like -50c outside without wind.... get close here in the winter.... haha

Your right, and so far I have not run into any issues however my OCD side sees a part that's not working.
I know ....... weird.

hahaha I get fussy with some things like that too. But given the age of this stuff and the simplicity I'd almost just want to delete the wiring just to be tidy. I want to find the specs of some other filter assemblies as something slightly different shape in my trucks case may make filters easier to change. I deleted the factory mounting bracket "thing" for a piece of angle iron since I could not conceive of how nissan figures the filters are easily spun off -on during and oil change without a bunch of bolts involved. Mind you I am VERY fussy about filter changes. oil is always every 5,000km and fuel filter every 10,000km. If I had a drain valve like the td27 or the 720PU then I might risk 15,000KM or 2 filters a year with draining every oil change.
