Complete LD28 from Datsun 240z conversion

#1

Post by 240ZD »

Hello!

I have sold my diesel-converted 240z to a car collector/restorer, without the engine, so I now have the engine for sale:

1982 engine, has about 140,000 miles. This engine has given me pretty much no problems over the last 7 years or so.

GOOD: Engine runs well. New head gasket a few years ago. NOS diesel injection pump bought from Al Savage. Also has the Al Savage double-roller-bearing IP pump tensioner. Injectors rebuilt and optimized a few years ago. Good starter. Converted to rear-sump. Turbo 280zx oil pump.

BAD: small crack in the modified oil pan needs to be repaired. There is also a minor seeping fuel leak on one part of the IP; not a seal, just a little gasket. The alternator is new and Japanese, but it quit on me after 4 days :[ not sure why.

I have the rebuilt Rajay turbo system I was using for sale also, separately, for 800 bucks.

Price for the engine is 1500 bucks obo; I will add in the turbo for an additional 500 bucks if you buy the engine, unless it sells separately of course!.

I'll ship the turbo system, but not the engine. Location: Eugene, OR For more information, call me at 337-412-two six four oh

Thanks for looking. The turbo conversion and the install of the engine into the 240z, as well a the head gasket replacement, are on this site in different build threads by me, 240zd, and there are some youtube videos up of this car in action with the diesel. Here is one with the turbo installed:

Tell us the full story. Why would one dismantle a good runner just to sell a 240Z rolling chassis. These can be had for a few hundred bucks, especially in California.

Dieseldorf, I still have the modified tach sensor I bought from you many years ago! I should add that to the list of what a buyer gets with this engine.

The 240z was WAY too worn out to be a daily driver: cracked windshield, all seals old and rotten, wheel bearings worn out, differential bad, no heater, bad bushings, bad U-joints, bad interior, bad headlights, bad battery, etc. etc. I hadn't driven it for 6 months or more, and it was starting to rust. I wanted the car to go to a good home, as it was the desirable 1970 year model with a clean title, and deserved better than I could do for it. I didn't have the money or will to rebuild the whole car. So I pulled the engine and sold the chassis to a man who is going to rebuild the car (as it deserves) and who plans to reinstall a gas L-series motor. I had always thought that the diesel swap would have been better in a 280Z (beefier suspension), but I happened to have the 240 when the diesel swap happened.

While I had the diesel Z, all my extra car money went into the engine itself, which never let me down. If I have to, I will eventually end up parting out the engine since it is festooned with great parts. Normal Datsun z people do not normally recognize the turbodiesel engine's worth except for its stroker crank, nor do they want to pay for a built LD28T just cause it happens to be in their favorite kind of car.

I have entered new pursuits, and auto mechanics are way down on my list right now, and I don't have the time to hunt down increasingly hard to find parts for old cars and engines. However, my good friend installed a JDM 4D56T into a Mitsubishi Starion, and I'm so impressed with it and that era of 4 cyl Japanese diesel that if I do a future swap it will be a CD20T into a Nissan Pulsar.

If anyone is interested in this engine or the turbo (with LD28 exhaust adapter), feel free to make an offer. Like the 240Z itself, they both need good homes.
