5spd reverse idler gear needed

#1

Post by diesel-man »

I need a reverse idler gear for a diesel 5spd transmission. I have a customer that has a few Maxi diesel cars, and one of them had their 5spd trans rebuilt and the trans shop put the gas idler gear in it. Well as you can guess it isn't quite right. If anyone has a GOOD used one or knows about where I can get a new one, I'd appreciate it. I haven't called the dealer...forgot. I'm figuring the trans place already tried???

Anyway, just wondering if anybody has an extra one squirreled away?
Thanks

New (for a diesel 720 version) was about $80, four years ago. Still available, though.

I was offered used ones from Spencer @ Transmission Xchange in Portland, Ore. for about $25 IIRC.

From what I hear, they are very often in bad condition. Worse, there are something like four versions (tooth count varies).

[later]

Here's the info I wrote years back about the FS5W71x reverse gear:
My '79 gasser's reverse idler has 23T and a couple of 1/8" chips.

I called Transmission Exchange in Portland, Ore. to order some other parts, and inquired about a reverse idler. They couldn't furnish a new one but offered a "good, used" one that didn't sound any better than mine. One thing to note: the tech said that there were (at least) three different tooth counts on that idler: 21T, 22T, 23T were mentioned specifically.

The local Nissan dealer said he should be able to get the 23T reverse idler for about $81. I declined to order one, and re-used mine instead.

I have an acquaintance who (ab)uses a 720 4WD gasser; he has three FS5W71s with reverse out of all of them.
Neither the paper 910 Parts Catalogue, nor Nissan FAST electronic lookup program, offer the tooth count. Here's the relevant picture from FAST (click on image for larger):

Both FAST and paper list three reverse gear part Nos., but don't specify different for L24e or LD28 . . .
Image

. . . , and two of the three reverse gears are superseded by

GEAR - REVERSE,COUNTER 32220-V5020, $52 (if still available).

The other reverse gear is
GEAR - REVERSE,COUNTER 32220-E9200, $55 (if still available).

Still, FAST and paper does not list a difference for diesel or gasser [shrug]. However, according to Spencer (quoted above, sorta), the basic trans was available with at least those other gear choices -- probably for other applications (like the 720, 2x0Z, etc.).

I personally have only 720 cores.

reverse idler gear is 32282-

the 32220- is the counter gear on the layshaft.

i dont have a fast list to look them up.
the box was superceded in mid 1980's with lots of updates between 83-86 before the type C was released.the later baxes dont have the steel plate bolted on top at the rear.

the specs count i have for 5 speed-
main shaft all types 71B-C 36 teeth--counter shaft all types 15 teeth

idler gear-
floor 5 speed 21 [note remote shift 720 has 21]
4 speed with 3.5 ratio first gear has 21
idler gear remote shift 4 and 5 speed-23 teeth

idler gear floor shift 4 speed-22 teeth [this might be the wrong part fitted]

in 1987 book only 21 teeth is listed.

Y'all are right, the reverse gear "is" 23 teeth according to the FSM on page MT-17. Reverse is the same ratio as the gas. What is strange is the manual trans has different ratios only on 5th gear, whereas the auto is different ratios on first on the 82 and (first and overdrive on the 83?) My 83 FSM is at the garage, just remembering.

Anyhow I'll stop into the trans place and see what'sup.

Looking at the gear ratios for the manual transmission...I think I'd rather have the gas tranny. (little taller overdrive) $3.99 for diesel at my local Arab lifestyle repository.

gas trans in australia are lower in ratio.

5 th gear teeth counts for 1985 models world wide.
floor shift 3.23 ratio first --21/44 main shaft/counter shaft.
all others 24/44
remote shift 22/38 or 24/45

first ratio 3.321---3.592----4.218---4.955

4.955 [over drive is almost nothing] this uses a special constant mech gear.

2 different gear sets for jatco auto trans-wide ratio used on 3 speeds and smaller engines and commercial vehicles--narrow ratio used on 4 speeds in cars like 300Z and skyline.
