Ray Mac, it's just avian flu -- j/k, but though I'm not going to die, last night I wished I would. Today I *must* work, three-man shop with the two others out of town, lockshop, and people don't stop locking themselves out of their homes and cars just because I'm sick -- and I'm the only lockshop in many miles in this rural area.

I'm drugged at the moment and feel a little better. Can't think straight, but I feel better.

80 MPG . . . I've said it before.

I'd like less visible smoke. More power would be OK, though I think that 80 HP is enough for what I want to do -- to me, the Maxima diesel Wagon doesn't feel underpowered most of the time, but then I am not trying to fight a rat race commute in the city, I live in a pretty rural area and I can take as long as I want to accelerate (and I do). I drive everywhere using cruise control -- it keeps me from speeding, a real problem I had when I was younger. Now I only exceed the speed limit when I'm driving in Nevada. There are lots of places out there where even 70 MPH seems pretty slow, the roads are dead straight for miles, and there's little traffic much of the time.

Al S.

I haven't looked closely, but is the body of the Bosch diesel kiki pump like that of other VE pumps? If so one could potentially adapt the LDA from a TD VE pump (four or six cylinder) to the LD28 pump. It could be a potential mess, but I have heard of someone on vwvortex taking the LDA from a Peugeot and installing it on their VW na diesel pump to use on a TD.

Also, I'm not sure how a pump from the VW 2.4 TD used on the Volvo 740 series engine compares to the Bosch diesel Kiki unit.

just some random thoughts

The Volvo (VW) IP was the one I've been thinking about. Talk about rare, though. AFAIK, the turbo 2.4 was available for ONE year.

Steve, this is where all my work pays off. Of *course* that's the obvious way to go . . . and a path I'd entirely overlooked! Why didn't I think of that!?

Geez . . . bolt-on, almost. Some photos of L28 turbos I found tonight:

That's funny, I "assumed" you were thinking along those lines already. It did seem obvious to me anyway, at least from what we already knew about 280ZX fans wanting LD28 intake manifolds, the reverse must work as well, which gives turbo power to the LD28...viola!

Bolting on stock parts is great, and a big money saver here too. There are a lot of 280 turbo cars out there waiting to donate their setup to the LD28.

Nice pics BTW.

This is going to be pretty cheap, too. Exhaust manifold can be had for under $100, the turbo is in the $200-250 range (for a 300ZX one; the actual 280ZX seem to be more expensive for an inferiour unit). The only part I haven't got a definite price on so far is the turbo outlet ("C" in the last pic). Add a couple of gaskets, and the exhaust work -- I'll want slightly larger diameter tubing all the way back, so all-new exhaust is the way I'll likely go, since I have a good exhaust guy in our town -- and the addition of a boost gauge and pyrometer, and it's like done, man. I'm getting excited. Could do the whole shebang for $600. More, if a rebuilt turbo is needed, but still . . . that's a lot less than I'd thought.

Exactly! That's why I was confused when you kept kind of talking around the L28 turbo option...this is not going to be an expensive proposition with the turbo z stuff!

Either way, I'm glad you now see the light, and the ease with which this can be done. I can't wait to see Al's screaming LD28 drag-wagon at the track.

Obviously we don't know the specifics of what this will add to engine power but it could make the LD28 with OD tranny and the 82 wagon rear diff setup that we talked about work...but that's just a guess.

BTW, I would think one would want to add an intercooler to this setup as well.

I want to see the pyrometer numbers before I get excited about an intercooler. I don't expect a lot of power improvement, my goal is to reduce the visible smoke. When that gets down to a more acceptable level, then I'll add an NOx cat converter too.

Since I'm not adding more fuel, only more air, even if the intake air temp goes up 40° I doubt the added thermal stress is significant -- this would be different if more fuel was being added, of course. While I like the idea of an FMIC, I don't know if it's necessary.

The AT may not shift right if torque goes up much. The vac modulator would need a boost bleed modulator -- actually a fixed pressure differential valve. Even this might not work because if there is a torque increase, it'll happen even at very low boost levels. I thought about this a little today, I'm hoping that it won't be necessary because I can see it getting hairy fast. This might work better with a 5-spd than the AT.

Drag Wagon? I don't think so. The Maxima needs vastly better brakes for one thing, I think the brakes are the most significant weak area on the Wagons, they're undersized for the application. How are the Sedan brakes?

And I can't afford to wipe out any more u-joints until I get a repeatable home-rebuild procedure in place. Warming up the tires for the run might sieze one or more u-joints, and that'd be embarassing, wouldn't it? All that smoke and nowhere to go.

Al S.

Eric Neyerlin - owner of ZPARTS.COM, and the fellow who took the pic of the 300ZX turbo and other bits above, responded today to my earlier email on this topic.

Al

Although I run the exact same setup on an L28 powered 240Z as pictured on my site in link above, I am not at all knowledgeable about turbo setups or merits of one over another. My car was built by a knowledgeable engineer with full knowledge about how to optimize it all. He was the one that pointed out to me that a watercooled, 300ZX turbo setup bolted up to a 280ZX exhaust manifold and 300ZX down pipe elbow to replace one from 280ZX was a superior solution and set up on an L series engine. I must agree because at the drags, my car pulled a 102 mph, 13.3 sec quarter mile with tall, 3:36 rear end, hard street rubber tires and soft & tired stock suspension without even getting out of 4th gear with very little tweaking of the turbo set up as installed.

I believe I still have all the components depicted in my illustration photo although I do not know the state of wear of the turbo. The 81 280ZX turbo manifold is priced at $100. because there is much demand for that one. If you get serious about the whole setup in photo, let me know and I will try to offer it to you at as attractive a package price as possible after you make clear what all you'd want included.

Also nice to see someone supporting the Nissan diesel engine user community. I am always interested to buy up LD28 crankshafts in case you are aware of ones sitting off in garages unused.

Also, I have one good? used head in storage from an LD28 engine I will sell cheap in case one of your members in need.

I think it's great that he kept diesel parts when most don't, so at least he understands the value of a cylinder head, even if it isn't something he needs.

I picked up a 300ZX turbo, with outlet section, off Portland CraigsList for $100:

I have a t3 turbo from a z31(mid- to late-80s) Nissan 300zx that I
bought off of a member of a message board for a turbo project on
my 240sx. However, plans have changed, so it's up for sale. The Z31
uses a .60 trim T03 compressor. The turbo itself seems to be in good
condition and I was told it came off of a running car. There is
minimal shaft play. I also have the outlet elbow that would bolt up
to the exhaust and some of the water and oil lines are still attached.[/quote]

I'm not going to install it, I'm going to fondle it

Probably the '82 Wagon. But I'm not certain.

Might steal the pyrometer setup (new-in-box) out of the '84 F250 diesel. Need a boost gauge.
