My 1982 Auto transmission Maxima diesel will shift from 1st to 2nd but not from 2nd to 3rd. It was about a quart low on tranny fluid but is topped up now. This is my first slushbox. 140,000 miles. Any ideas?

Hello, Gregg:

Please read this thread for a start-to-finish on a rig that had that exact symptom, including the fix.

More related reading is in this thread in which a different problem caused a related problem.

Lastly, see [gotopost=

Al,
Thanks for the leads. This is Terry's car, as a matter of fact - the one with the same problem in the first post. I will use the info tomorrow to fix it. BTW, did you get my earlier email to you?

Your email to me must have gotten lost in the spam storm (I get ~120 spam emails/day). Please re-send it, and be sure to put "Datsun" in the Subject, or it could get deleted again.

I met you briefly at the 6th Annual Seattle BioDiesel Conference a couple of weeks ago. Sorry we didn't talk longer -- I was trying to stay focused on the panel discussions, and they had no breaks! I sat for six hours!

It's likely that one of those threads will give you the clue you need: vacuum leak somewhere.

Al,
I found and patched the same hole in the vacuum line as in the photo - I guess the electrical tape must have fallen off! It shifts fine now.

The HVAC fan started working after I fixed the vacuum link. It seems to be electric, but could the fan actuator be vacuum connected? Or is it a coincidence?

I will spend some time in the car to see if I love it enough. If not I iwll be selling it.

Thanks for your help.

While some portions of the HVAC system are vacuum controlled (the A/C idle RPM increase dashpot, for example), the interior fan is electrically controlled, and the heater valve and damper doors are controlled by levers and sleeved cables.
