Have you replaced the fuel filter?

If the "cutting out" is sharp and pronounced, that may be air getting into the fuel pickup or the fuel line from tank to the injection pump, or a failing injection pump. I'd be looking for air first -- use a short section of clear vinyl tubing temporarily plumbed to the inlet of the IP and run it, watch for bubbles. Air in fuel will give you the white smoke, too.

If it's more of a surging and lack of power, fuel restriction is the most likely cause, like Carimbo said: change the fuel filter first. You may have gotten a bad batch of fuel.

And, it goes without saying, that most problems with diesels running bad are due to fuel quality or filter problems.

Does your fuel filter's head have the original Nissan integrated fuel priming pump? The original vehicle from which the LD28 was removed had one.

Excerpt from bleeding procedure is in this post. Click on the picture in that post for the whole page of stuff from the manual on bleeding the fuel filter after changing it.

There's also a thread with some info (not much) here.

If your filter head is not the Nissan one, it's hard to give you good advice on how to bleed the system. Some people use a hand-operated vacuum pump on the injector pump's return line to pull fuel through the filter and pump.

Filter heads that do not have a built-in primer pump are generally used on engines whose injection pump has a primer pump on one side, such as the Nissan SD series.

i had the same problem before. basing it from the manual, my manual pump was not the Nissan one. might have been an Isuzu or Mitsubishi. i also realized it when i bought a VIC fuel filter for my LD28 and it wouldnt fit. brought my current filter to the autosupply and was advised that it for an Isuzu or Mitsubishi. Priming pump works well but i have to purge air from it like every 3 months
