Inside rear view mirror is break-away

#1

Post by asavage »

Be careful when adjusting the inside rear-view mirror, for it is a safety mirror that will break-away if you apply too much force.

Unlike other marques' break-away mirrors, this one actually breaks away the mirror mount, permanent-like, rather than the spring detent arrangement I've seen on other rigs. I just got done with some epoxy, fixing mine.

i had done the same thing, except mine broke off in such a bad spot epoxy and super glue only held it on for a little bit, so I painted the head of a longer screw black and screwed it into the remaining plastic

I was going to use some scrap steel and make a larger washer inside to sit on the "shelf" and drill/tap it for a machine screw instead of the plastic screw that holds the mirror to the base, but I figured epoxy on both the top & bottom will likely work. Or I might pick one up at the JY next weekend off that '84, if they haven't scrapped it by then.

do you see any cars in the JY with a grey interior?

I snapped the seatbelt buckle sheild on my car and the other ones falling apart. I need to either glue the old one together or get a new one soon

Nope, the '82 Wagon in Lynnwood JY was grey, but that was over two months ago, it's scrapped. The only other one I know about is the '84 Sedan in Lakewood, and it has a brown leather interiour (and may be gone by now).

What's a "seatbelt buckle sheild"? Just which part is it?

Nissan doesn't seem to sell the individual parts to the seatbelts, but you can buy the entire LH Front seatbelt assy (including the floor receptacle, belt, upper pulley & cover, and retractor mechanism) for $73, part No. 86880-W3201.

RH set is 86830-W3201, same price.

[That's about the same price as three 1983 LD28 oil filters, 15208-17A10, $24 ea! Remember, 1983 diesel has a different oil filter than '81-82.]

There's a grey 82 sedan at the local u-pull in Des Moines but it may be gone by now. Depends on whether they've gotten to that end of the crush pile yet. If it's there I'll grab it but I won't be there until maybe this Friday.

Well I did crazy glue the clip back together, If the car isnt gone by then can you try to snag me both clips, the other side has little hairline cracks on it

I'll check on it, no guarentee that they're any better than what you have now, but I'll look. It's at the very end of a large pile of cars. I was hoping to be around when they got there, it has two good alloy wheels on it that I was thinking of snagging before they went to the crusher. The console has been ripped out already but I'm not sure about what else. The windows / windshield are gone so the interior is mostly shot but if the belt trims are there I'll get them.

My five-minute-epoxy job didn't even survive installation, it broke right off. So off to Plan Bee:

Image Image Image

The metal is a chunk of steel flatbar, 1/8" x 3/4" wide x 1-1/16" long. I arced it by hand on the bench grinder, center-punched it by eye, drilled 3/16" which was just a tad too large IMO, but the OEM screw wouldn't self-tap on the next size smaller.

I ground off the "step" on the plastic insert, as shown in the second pic (lost part of a fingernail, dang it -- smell of hot fingernail hanging in the air!), and drilled it out to 13/64 so the screw no longer threaded into it. The finished result leaves the mirror the tiniest bit loose. If I did it again, I might try leaving that plastic piece out altogether, or putting a circle of .040 wire around between the metal plate and the plastic insert.

yours didnt fare as well as mine, for me only a little section of the part that broke off on yours broke off, so I was able to use a larger screw to compensate for the lost plastic. Stole your pic- just that ring came off

Your fix is probably better in the long run than mine, might hold the mirror up better when cleaning it, but im not that sure if its worth the broke fingernail - especially if it gets all nasty and gross and infected:lol:

I just ground off one corner of it. It ended up just being a bit short. Feels odd when fishing for change in my pocket now. Infection not likely.
