Engine torque damper

Took a pic of the one on my "spare" '83 LD28:

This one has absolutely no damping whatsoever. I can move the rod with two fingers.

[later edit]
As of Mar-2006, this was still available via Pinnacle Nissan.

Ok, so it's really a little baby shock absorber. I didn't recall that mine looked like that but I'll bet you're right. I'll have a look under the car next time I'm outside...in our newly fallen snow.

Yeah, we've got heavy frost now, and snow predicted for this afternoon. Good thing I have a) Trak-loc (posi), and b) common sense :)

If this thing plays out, does your car shake when you kill the engine? If so, mine is worn out.

They are probably all shot, by this time.

Mine is shot on the '82 Wagon, and the engine shakes the car pretty good at shutdown, but I don't know how the torque damper could improve that.

What about the 83? Does it shake too?

Does anyone else's car do this or have a comment about it?

I had never driven one of these cars until I bought my wagon a couple of months ago. I noticed the shake when I returned from test driving the car and thought, "OK that's got to be fixed". You wouldn't think that they shook like that when they were new but, for all I know they may have.

I have never found it objectionable myself. Diesels stop hard. A Cummins pickup will actually chirp the serpentine belt because they stop so hard. My Jeep has a motorized butterfly that functions much like the butterfly on the Maximas except it also closes on shutdown for a soft stop.

MB used an anti-shudder valve for shutdown on some models.

I,too, have heard several Dodge/Cummins shutdown serp belts chirp.

Carimbo replaced the motor mounts on his '82 Sedan, and reports that shutdown shaking is improved.
