Nissan D21 SD25

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Nissan D21 SD25

Post by dieselfanatic »

I'm looking to buy a D21 SD25 in Canada but I'm having a hard time finding one. I'm curious to this model. I do and have owned diesel cars including VW TDI's and Mercedes diesels. Is the SD25 a turbocharged engine? How reliable are they? Do they have any know problems? Are parts hard to find and to service?

The SD23 and SD25 are not turbo. If you want that version, find the TD-25 and TD-27.

The SD23/25 have 5 crankshaft journals ... that are the same diameter of the SD22 but are narrower. The SD22 has three mains that are quite a bit wider ... same as the SD33 six cyl.

There are a number differences in the SD23/25. Both are very robust. "Problems" are due to neglect. Keep the oil changed, keep the cooling system good, keep nitwitts away from electrics.

In ANY SD engine, you need to have the Nissan Motor Manual because nobody else handy is going to know anything useful.

And as I have said before ... a D21 with an SD25 does not really exist.

listen to big p..............he knows,.....i'm one of the three on this forum that owns one. unless you are lookin for a challange i suggest not finding one. parts non-existance, maintanance- full time, you have to give the s/n # when you go to nissan, because it does not come up automaticly in their system...........i know they are out their, one is making a nissan mech. out of another on this fourm! parts are VERY hard to find, after all is said and done at the end of the day.........some mecanixs, are up for the challange and will never be rid of their truck, i'm one, on a MISSION, 1mil on the od. good luck!

I found yet another one for sale here in Brandon that I'm going to look at. No idea what condition, but having a parts truck never hurts. I like my little truck, but it does have it's problems.

Did you ever find the Nissan D21 truck with details about the SD25 included?

How did the cross member get busted ?

Sounds like it had a hard life.

Still if you can keep it going they are nice little trucks.

Mine lived it's original life out there and loves to return to the nice sea level think air. Here at 4000+ feet it's a little on the anemic side but will still drive it till there is nothing left.

I also have an 87 D21 with an SD25...but I am about to change it for another SD25. The "new" one has an inline IP so am assuing it is pre 87 out of 720.
The current engine has 500,000 km on it and is getting a little tired, though still runs well.

If this all works out, I may sell the older engine if someone wants a project.
