My first mechanical problem. I started out hearing a grinding noise when the starter disengaged. Then a whining sound followed .At first it sounded like an intake leak. Due to my busy work schedule 6days a week ,10 hrs a day, I took it to my local independent shop. They called back and said all the starter bolts fell out! The noise was the flywheel "Machining" the nose of the starter. Since it is aluminum, no damage to flywheel. I saw the old starter. The flywheel did a really clean job of almost sawing off the nose of the starter! While it was at the shop,I had them install a clutch kit. I will be keeping a close look at at all bolts and apply locktite as needed .

How were you able to start the engine every time without bolts to hold the alignment of the starter? I understand with one bolt missing, but all?

It would crank normally start and grind for a second after starting .Then the whining noise would start then go away at 40 mph. It got louder as the flywheel cut deeper into the nose of the starter. I do not know why the starter did not fall out! I think the starter was getting tired despite the fact that the bolts were missing. I cranks faster and smoother now .
