SD 22 in a 82' Datsun 720 KC: What is this?

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Hey there guys I am a completely new to diesel engines and specifically the sd22 that came in the 82' Datsun I just picked up. So apologies ahead of time if I ask some really basic/simple questions.

Any ways here is the old girl that I picked up.

I've been doing a good deal of reading on these engines and have down loaded a FSM for the datsun.
My main question which has been bugging me a bunch without a solid answer is what is this part on the back left (if sitting in the cab) of the engine?

My best guess is its the breather but it looks like its missing a part. When the engine heats up it is emitting what looks like exhaust and its getting the surrounding area pretty dirty. I'm just wondering if I should be on high alert about this problem or not.

There are also a few other quirks but after doing a bunch of reading on here I think I've got plans for all of those.

Hope you guys can help :)

That is the engine/block breather, and yours looks like it has been cut, it's supposed to have a tube coming out of it pointing down like in the photos I have attached.
The tube coming out of it should go down just to the outside of the starter and end about the bottom of the frame.
It looks like you should replace that part if it has been cut.
Where are you located?

The reason I asked where you were located is because I likely have that breather complete in the shed, so if you were close...........
You should hit up all the wrecking around where you live until you find a diesel to grab parts off of, you should get that breather housing, and if I were you I would have an extra starter, alternator/vacuum pump, DPC module, IP controller, and glow plug timer on hand in case you have an issue with any of them, it's getting harder and harder to find these diesel parts, I do have a stash, but I am very protective of it, starters are what I have the most issues with myself.

BTW, what is that bumper made for?
It's really a strange looking bumper, does it have a specific use?

Yeah the farm boys i bought the truck off of fashioned their own trailer hitch. Its just made out of some steel and i don't trust their single bead weld at all, so towing with that hitch won't be happening until i can strengthen it.

I'll definitely be searching for some diesels in the area for parts. I appreciate the recommended pick up list.

Cheers.

Hunt around for a nice 720 aftermarket rear bumper, there are some nice ones out there, I have a couple of them on my trucks.
