* Won't Shut Down, Smoke, IPC link rod *

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

I appreciate the pictures!!! Perhaps next time I will go for the brass. My pin is not as worn as Knucklehead's, but it has been cut into.

It turns out that the control arm did have bushings, but they were worn. The upper bushing was even more worn than the one on the picture.

I found almost direct replacement nylon bushings from ACE hardware for 30 cents/ea:

I had to file down the base a little bit to make it thinner and of course I had to cut off the stems. The black Nylon bushing felt a pinch harder than the white one. Now the truck shuts down IMMEDIATELY.

I was able to test compression thanks to Al's lending me his setup. Here's what I got (in PSI):

1. 410
2. 440
3. 430
4. 420

Any comments on these values? Good? or just OK?

It's within 10% variation, so that part is good. I noticed though, that a little bit of smoke was coming out through the glow plug hole for #1 while I was testing the others. So some oil is getting in there. I am hoping that it's through the valve stem seals. I have to figure out where all the oil goes. My oil consumption now is almost 1 quart/refill. I've been using Valvoline Premium Blue Diesel engine oil, 15W-40 (the Napa diesel oil is also by Valvoline).

The glow plugs are nowhere near the valve guide seals. Think weeping injector.

SEE SD cyl head diagram, 2nd image.

Weeping injector... when one does a compression test, the DPC is disconnected, so there should be no fuel getting inside the cylinders, should it?

In theory. But add how far past STOP the fuel lever is positioned and you sometimes get something a little different. Note with the engine stopped, you can move the fuel control lever further left still.

In the STOP position, if I crank over a cold engine (Yes glow plugs, but failed DPC), the engine has one cylinder that still gets a wee bit o'fuel ... judging by a weak desire to fire.
