How can the production date of a 720 pickup be determined? Can it be decoded from the VIN? I'll go poke around on the truck, but any help is appreciated.

I think that I found it. On the driver's side door jamb, the information plate has "11/81" stamped on it.
I guess that even trucks from 9/81 could be called model year 82.

My 1982 has a build date of 10/81 stamped on the door jamb plate. Also, "10/81" is inked on the upper AC compressor bracket.

No. The Model Year (MY) can be determined from the VIN, but not the ProDate. From Wikipedia:
