Owner's Manual

I found someone who has a owners manual for a 1980 but I have a 1982. Does anyone happen to know if it would be close enough to cover most things I need to know? Also would the diesel be covered in the same book?

Thanks,
Lonnie

I have a genuine 1982 Owner's Manual. The book covers 2WD, 4WD, gas, and diesel. I doubt a 1980 owners manual would have any diesel references. Try ebay.

FAR more to the point ... own a copy of the factory service manual.

{{A few minutes later ...}}

I found a 1980 Datsun 720 owner's manual on ebay. I asked the Seller if there was a diesel section. The answer was "NO".

Thanks!
I'll keep looking.

I have a Chilton's repair manual but it's pretty much worthless & very hard to find what you need unless it's just basics.

I was going to try e-bay but hadn't got that far yet...

Follow this thread. I post FSMs here.

You just missed a couple.

The 1980 models have no diesel. 1981 Maxima and 720 FSMs have separate Diesel Supplements while 1982 and later FSMs include the diesel.

I don't know if the 1981 720 & Maxima Owners manuals have the diesel info integrated, or separate like the FSMs.

A FSM is absolutely necessary. In particular, you can't troubleshoot the DPC or GP systems without one. I do have some of the '82 FSM chapters online.

Al, when you say "I post FSMs here. ", are these what you have for sale or just what you find on e-bay?

I'll keep looking but if anyone happens to stumble onto one they don't need I'll buy it. Owners manual and or FSM.

Thanks,
Lonnie

The FSMs I post in that thread are eBay finds. I run about a dozen eBay "canned searches" every week, and the interesting stuff related to Nissan diesels, I post in the Peddle forum. FSMs are so common that I put them all in one long, running thread.

I sold my own last 1982 FSM to Moose60 and haven't bought a replacement. I have a full set 1980-1986 for the 720 (except the 1981 Diesel Supplement that I sold to someone here who had to have it, and the 1982 FSM that I sold to Moose60). I will eventually buy replacements for those two, but I won't bid against someone else who needs one, which is why I'm taking so long in replacing mine :) I don't really need them, and I want someone who does to have it.

If you need one immediately, you can generally get a 1982 720 FSM for about $40 -- here's one (somewhat rarer 1982 + 1983 FSM, but not in real great shape for the price), and here's another '82 FSM for $25. If you are patient and can wait a week or two, you can get one for as little as $10. In any event, you must have one.

As for Owners Manuals, here's one that didn't sell for .99, five days ago. If you want it, use eBay's "Contact Seller" and ask if they'll be re-listing it in another auction. Per eBay's rules, you are not supposed to negotiate outside of an auction, but it's OK to ask if it'll be up for auction again. Usually, the Seller will email back (via the email address you gave them) and offer to sell it direct. I've done that several times.

Thanks Al,
I went ahead & e-mailed the fellow with the owners manual & asked if he would put it up for auction again. We'll see what he does.

I'll hold off for a little while & see what comes up on e-bay for a FSM. Other wise I may go ahead & get the one for $25

Hey Al,
I found this one on e-bay today & went ahead & bid on it. Says on the front it covers the SD22 so it should work.

That's one of the rarer 1982 + 1983 FSMs. I normally wouldn't pay that much for a FSM but for that one . . . if it doesn't go any higher, it's a decent deal.

See if you can negotiate mailing it in a BOX (not an envelope: I have received at least a dozen damaged or destroyed manuals/books in envelopes, even padded ones) and USPS Media Rate, which should get shipping under $5. Some Seller will, some use S&H as a profit center. Your Seller doesn't say how he'll ship it for $8.25 .

Yes, I have had countless pieces of literature crinkled up through shipping in bags or padded bags. Usually something as simple as asking to have it shipped in a box would get the seller to drop the book in a box so itll stay in perfect condition on the ride over.

I always offer an extra dollar for the trouble of finding a box to put it in. I've had USPS really mangle some boxes too. I got one manual in two pieces -- a week apart!

Always ship manuals and books in a box. Sometimes you can get away with single pages and such in an envelope, provided a cardboard backer and front are used.

Good advice!
I'll see what I can get them to do...

I missed earlier when I read that auction's description, that it's a NEW manual. For an unused FSM, I pay quite a bit more. Actually, if you weren't bidding on it, I'd probably run it up to $25 or maybe more. It's one I'd like to add to the "collection" someday.

New manuals are easier to scan that used ones, and yield better results.

I have 1 copy each of the 1982, 1982-1983, and 1984 FSMs.

What's special about the '82-'83 FSM?

I don't know: I don't have one.

I have 1980, 1981 (no Supplement) (x2) (no 1982), 1983 (x2?), 1984, 1985, 1986 x 2.

I need to re-get an '81 Supplement and an '82; for completeness, I'd like an 82+83 too.
