gas to diesel swap; keep tranny?

Never posted before, hope this works!
I have an 84 Sunrader motor home with a Z24 currently../ I have been through 3 junkyard trannys on the road. I have an extra now that may be rebuildable... My wife is trying to convince me to drop a diesel motor in... It may happen eventually. I need to know if I will be able to bolt my freshened tranny to an SD engine?
Then comes the SVO conversion... But one thing at a time...

So, 2WD nissan long tranny bolts to diesel??

Welcome.

I'm not knowledgeable about the SD22 but I know from reading threads here that it's a small engine - it may not have enough power to move your motorhome to your satisfaction, even if it's a small one. Turbo charging will increase the output but it may be better to start with a larger motor. That may be the first question, prior to determining tranny options.

Cheers, Rufus

Hey there, thanks for the reply...
After a little research, albeit limited on what I could find, it does seem that the horsepower from the diesel would be considerably less than my current 4 gas cylinders... This thing can barely get out of its own way as it is. But, I don't mind going slow, as long as it gets me there, the trade-off being the opportunity to pirate free fuel from the fryer pit...
I am aiming for simplicity of installation; if I can just bolt-in something that works, it's great. SD25 may work, I'm also wondering if the SD33 would fit, and if it would bolt on to my tranny?
I'd like not to have to change the driveshaft or mounts if I can help it...
Any info out there as far as suppliers of these type engines/trannys?
I know, I know; Don't fix it if it aint broke!! But hey, 1000 miles per tank sounds pretty good to me...

Good Day!

Is the vehicle currently powered by a Nissan engine? That why you're thinking an SD22? I guess that's possible, but it'd likely be worth checking the SD25 for the same measurements and then doing the big search to find one (provided it fits). Provided it's a good runner, I'd figure a bolt-in transplant is automatically worth at least $2000 savings compared to one you have to make up as you go. However then there's the tank, gauges and controls...

If it looks like you're going to have to fabricate stuff (usually the case) then you might look at the Cummins fours. I hear they're noisy when they rev (so you want tall gears) but powerful. Fitting a six into someplace designed for a four might not be worth it even if you could do it.

Vegi oil raises some strong opinions here. You can find a couple of long posts on the subject. From what little I've gleaned you can't be too careful about your setup, your maintenance or your start/shut-down procedures if you expect it to last more than a few months. Fueling sounds kinda gunky, too. <g>

Well, the Sunraider moble home was made here in Napa calif and was based on a Nissan 1-ton cab and chassis with a fiberglass class B camper attached. I don't think they came with a diesel option but had the 4 cyl. motor and 5 speed. I am very familiar with the sd-22 as I have one with turbo in my LR, You will only get 100 hp and about 130 ft/lb torque with this motor at full turbo build-up so I doubt it will pull the 4000+ lbs of motorhome. the 4 cyl. cummins is too big to fit, too high, in the engine compartment. Don"t know what would work, maybe a later nissan 4 diesel? oh, and the 5 speed ffrom the diesel must be used behind the sd-22 the gas one won't fit. sorry.......BOB.

I have not done this soooooo.

I understand the front section of the transmission is removable.
There is a gas vs diesel section. The transmission is interchangeable as long as attached to the appropriate front section.
Sort of like a bellhousing only it is not a bellhousing.

CUMMINS 4BT engines are about 800 lbs, so i doubt i would be dropping one into a nissan motor home.

i doubt a 6 cylinder nissan would fit either. maybe with the radiator relocated out back or something, and the front of the engine sticking thru the grille/core support..
