I'd like to know the "publication date" (the date on the mag, the date to pull from the stands) of this article. I'm guessing sometime in late 1980?

Starting with the pic: isn't that a 4WD ST? Not offered with a diesel in the US. Was it offered anywhere?

Comparing the 720/SD22 with a VW "pickup" is sure unfair. The VW has no frame and is considerably lighter than the 720. And it has a smaller displacement engine with ~15 fewer HP.

Last sentence: The 810 was going to get the SD22? I don't think so!

What's this about a heat exchanger for the fuel (third paragraph)??
Regards,
Al S.

I have no record of a diesel 4x4 ST in the US. Elsewhere in the world (Australia?), might be. Or....

Hey ... it's Car & Driver magazine! :D  I don't trust Consumer Reports either.

I think the US (maybe Canada) was one of the few countries to recieve a 6 cylinder diesel powered 810. My RHD parts catalog doesn't list any LD28 as having been available. They may have based their comment about the SD22 (however erroneously) on what was being offered elsewhere.

my best guess

I think that the non-US-spec 910 used an LD20.

That's the only diesel powerplant I show in the RHD catalog.
