Discuss (and cuss) the Nissan LD-series OHC Six diesel engine, popularly available in the US in 1981-83 Datsun/Nissan Maxima Sedans & Wagons.

In searching for LD28's and 810/maximas on the web many wrecking yards post the vin # but do not say weather it is gas or diesel, does any one have or know what digit in the vin that would state its a diesel??

Good question.

I just checked a Factory Service Manual, and Nissan did not provide any clues about VIN <-> engine specs (back in the LD28 era).

I just checked about six online "free VIN decoder" sites, and the VINs I tested of diesel Maxima Wagons I've owned, they all "decoded" to the gas engine, so I'm guessing that a reliable VIN method of engine determination may not exist.
