Right when this was posted, my computer went down for good, and so lost everything including passwords and such and when new computer up had trouble logging in here, so now it's resolved. To go back to the question, still haven't had time to perform the various tests, and-or try the timing, but we've put together a good diagnostic plan to find the problem. Thanks again, Duane

Diesel black smoke

One more mention of the black smoke, now that I have more of these cars running here, I can compare the smoke from this particular car to other Maxima's that run good, and the smoke from this one is excessive. So that would go to an engine problem, and to cause the smoke a timing problem, and this causes the incorrect combustion. Duane
