I've ordered two 3-ring liner/piston/ring sets, and one 5-ring.

Member TDI_joe wants one of the 3-ring kits.

I am going to use the 5-ring kit for my genset project from the remains of the "Vashon Truck" since nobody wants the block and crank.

The other 3-ring set I will stock for myself.

All three sets, including shipping & insurance, ran $570 + wire transfer fee (assumed to be $25 at this point). So ~$200 ea. set. Ships in 1-2 weeks via DHL. We shall see.
Regards,
Al S.

Two packages -- totaling 54 lbs. -- shipped from ArcoMotor in Taiwan 28-Nov. They were at LAX on 30-Nov, whence they have sat until yesterday. ArcoMotor put some bogus phone/contact number on the shipping form, so DHL could not contact me to complete importation paperwork (DOT & IRS), so DHL contacted ArcoMotor to send the shipment back. ArcoMotor contacted me about it the night of 09-Dec. I faxed forms to DHL today (11-Dec).

We shall see . . .

DHL delivered them to me today. That was one day from LAX to rural western Washington.

While I haven't evaluated the parts, the packaging sure looks expensive ;)

My out-of-pocket dollar cost for this was $630 for three SD22 piston/liner/ring/pin bushings sets. So $210 each engine set.

Time cost was about three hours, with paperwork, phone calls, one trip to the bank for the wire transfer (which was about twenty minutes onsite time by itself, with an appointment!).

Gracia Lui @ ArcoMotor provided the correct wire transfer info via email. The only SNAFU was the wrong contact phone number on the DHL paperwork, so they couldn't reach me to email me the forms to get the shipment through Customs. The product is packed unusually well, with a double-fluted carboard outer box, and each individual box also double-fluted.

DHL was very easy to work with. They answered their phone, I was able to get contact with the same DHL liaison in three out of four calls. Unlike some shippers, they were able to actually answer my paperwork Qs. Their online presence allows one to ask them to send automated email at one or more shipping "events", and though the emails I received were oddly formatted, sent twice per event, and a bit cryptic, they were timely and did keep me informed about where my shipment was in the system. The boxes arrived without damage (a rarity in the UPS world, which is why I no longer ship UPS).

Transit time was almost exactly a fortnight, of which ten days was delay in paperwork.

I would do this again.

Al S.

Would you take a photo of the piston .... out of the plastic? Am curious about the ring grooves.

Also, the cylinder. Are these to be pressed in and then honed to finished diameter like OEM? Or are these like the ones Galen got, which were slip fit into the block and already finished inside?

The 5-ring version does not have a steel ring carrier.

From the color, your new SD22 does not appear to have the ring carrier like below. (Courtesy of Galen)

Same pistons with teflon ...

Here's the SD33 without (NA) and with (Turbo) the ring carrier. (Courtesy Binder Bulletin)

Oops. (...for 720 trucks)

Galen's OEM pistons are back in service ... and with teflon.

Pistons

3 rings with no ring carrier is ... marine / industrial (max torque rpm limit) and possibly pre 1981 vehicles (Cedric?)

5 rings with no ring carrier is ... marine / industrial (and some SD33 non-turbo).

The non-steel-top-ring-carrier piston will work OK in a 720. It is not an OEM piston, does not have to use identical construction or mfgr'ing techniques. It's about a quarter the cost of OEM, according to the numbers TDI_Joe was quoted:
TDI_Joe wrote:he price from Nissan online parts was:

12033-R8112 Ring set (4) for 3 ring piston 169.30
11012-76200 Liner (1) 81.80
12010-36W10 Piston Set 3 ring (1) 70.40
That's $195 per hole for the Nissan OEM parts, vs. $53 per hole for these non-OEM. For that price differential, I can live without the greater piston longevity of the steel ring carrier. And the non-steel design can transfer heat away from the top ring more effectively. There are trade-offs everywhere.

Next up is to evaluate the liner fit. Do we have the "preferred" OD for a liner @ 70°F? I have a new set of outside mics, up to 4". That video you did of Galen dropping a liner in is scary to me -- only because I've only ever pressed them in. I don't know as I like the idea of a slip-fit dry liner.

Liner puller. I'm going to have to rent one from Galen or Kevin to do mine. I'm not planning on doing this over and over, so a rented one is the way to go for me. I have a press that can handle pushing the liners out, but not the disk, and since they have already re-invented the OEM tool . . .

I wouldn't want slip fit. I thought they are freeze slip being dry sleeves. House 'fridge not liquid nitrogen.

Maybe some modern heat transfer glue material like the bearing lock
stuff.

I've never pressed these out. They used to weld and crack them. Wet sleeves I've use the pullers.

Has anyone asked JESCO for these parts? And please be sure Jesco is supplying OEM (carrier piston).
