truck starts then dies

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

truck starts then dies

i was driving and then it started laggin or running rough, then it died. felt like we were outta fuel. the guage wasnt on empty but it was pretty low.
so i put some fuel in it, then it starts up and runs, then surges a couple time and sounds really bad then dies. did this a couple times, and no matter how much throttle i give it, it dies after starting. I tried cracking the lines at the injectors and got some bubbly fuel to dribble out. but still wont keep running.

got it towed home. tried it in the morning, wouldnt even start. Tried bleeding the lines at the filter then i got it started, and kept running but sounded prettty bad.

any ideas?

It kinda sounds like there's still air coming through. Keep on working the handpump and bleeding the system. Don't overlook the bleeder screw on the pump itself.
It may take a while to purge itself out. Never is good running these fellas out of fuel...

When the big filter gets plugged (bad fuel), the IP's lift pump can find holes where none existed before. That lift pump on the Inline IP is very powerful. It can collapse lines.

See this post for more info.
