SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

So ... time for a "Lift Pump" rebuild.
How did you get from "A" to "B"? IOW, how did you know that it was "time for a lift pump rebuild"?

I miss things. I also don't read the SD stuff as closely as I could.

I had this problem once and used an electric low pressure 'pulser' type pump in front of the lift pump to solve the problem. Worked fine...

I had posted this some time ago. http://nissandiesel.dyndns.org/viewtopi ... 3561#13561
(I copied from posting and pasted here)
This little pump really does work well and I have installed it to "suck" through the screen pre filter just to keep the sticks, rocks, spiders, and dead bird beaks from being pulled through it. It's a huge time saver when you change the filters and no need to prime and bleed etc etc. I have had it on my "VE" style pump for 2 years now and no problems. Once it hits the max pressure it by-passes internally and will pass fuel if shut off as well.

Got the specs on my little inline electric fuel pump.

Spend the $18 and update the priming pump to the newer, leak-free style.

the next time i looked at the plunger it was stuck in the upright position.

then after driving it that way for a bit -the plunger functioned as designed for another week.

then symptoms expressed 2x in a row and actuating the plunger wouldn't flow fuel at all the second time.

had it towed home cause it was sunday night and no parts stores were open.

next morning i used the plunger to bleed the fuel system and started the engine and brought it up to operating temp with out difficulty.

i did discover that i could duplicate the conditions by squeezing the short vacuum hose post throttle body till the rpm dropped and blipping the throttle at the same time and the engine died.

so...

i purchased the lift pump rebuild kit and updated manual overide plunger from diesel fuel injection services here in portland for $20 and replaced the check valves, springs, copper washers, and the plunger. while i was at it i replaced the fuel lines and clamps to and from the secondary fuel filter and the ip and all 4 vacuum lines and used fuel injection line clamps all around.

and a healthy dose of cleaning, and painting...

drove the same routes that the got the little lady stranded and then up in the hills for a load of yard debris removal and all seems fine. for now...

don't ya just love intermittent issues

I have had a little lift pump on my SD with the VE for 6+ years now.

I posted about it here ( 7th post down)

http://nissandiesel.dyndns.org/viewtopi ... r&start=15

I have it hooked to the ignition switch in the run position.

I have it hooked to suck through the pre filter and then push through the water trap and the fuel filter.

Works very well and changing fuel filters is a breeze.

You can read the specs on it in the posting.

The beauty of it is that it will flow fuel it if its unplugged as well.

I have spoken with the fuel injection rebuild people about it and gave them the specs on the pump and they said there would be no issue using it.
It is used on Yanmar industrial diesels. Not sure who the manufacturer is on it though.
It looks like an old Chevy type inline metal gas filter only twice the size.
