I didn't realize they were metalized plastic. That certainly explains it.

They look like they're engine-turned aluminum, but nope. I will say, the outside finish holds up a lot better than I'd expect.

Tire jockeys pop them out to get the wheel on the tire balance machine. They're hard to get back on straight and probably end up flying off soon after. Some have segmented black rubber shims to tighten up the fit. I agree with Al about a dab of rtv or similar to help keep them attached.

From the project site where I have been working for the last month, it is 684 miles to where my new acquisition sits. If all goes well, I'll get on the road about noon tomorrow with my company truck and trailer. Wish it didn't have commercial tags. I'm probably supposed to hit scales with the trailer in tow. :( I say that, but I don't really know. The trailer is a car hauler, but I'm still concerned about the approach angle to get the car on there. May have to get creative. Brand new 4000 lb come along in the truck too. Need to get a strap to extend its reach.

I appreciate the well wishes guys. I already feel like the trip is a little off course. I've had to back up from the original plan of having all day Friday off from work. In other words, I wanted to be Texas bound tonight instead of noonish tomorrow.

Well, I'm back. 1,400 mile round trip, approximately 22 hours of driving. That is just back to where I'm working. Home is another 200 miles.

Friday was absolutely a beautiful day for a trip. Blue skies and many signs of Spring. A lot of the flowering trees, grass greening up, and all that.

No blown tires, no trailer wheel bearing failures, no broken trailer frames or axles, or any of that. All these have actually happened to me before, so that isn't paranoia talking.

The directions I had from Mapquest were pretty decent, and I managed to not get lost or get the trailer bottled up in any tight quarters.

The new come along and extension strap worked fine for loading the car. The previous owner helped. The approach angle on the trailer was tight but workable.

The car looks pretty good in person. It has been repainted. The passenger side marker light is broken, and the steel piece that fills in between the bumper and grill is pretty messed up.

The battery is stone dead.

The engine compartment is unmolested. Except for replacement battery terminals, and an extra wire from the battery to the alternator, it looks stock.

The interior is free of rips, but is dirty in places.

The trunk is about half full of extra parts. Alternator, starter, AC compressor, radiator, air filter housing with intake hose, two tie rods, and some other small items. Leftovers from other diesel Maximas that have been in the family. 82 service manual in fair condition too.

It has been dead since 05. Story goes that a friend borrowed the car and ran it out of fuel. Fuel was added, but the car didn't restart. No local shop would touch it, so it is mine now. If all that is accurate, I hope to drive it off the trailer under its own power.

The primer pump appears to be non functional on this car. Like my Blue car after IP seal replacement, I don't seem to be able to move any fuel with it. So, like my blue car, I temped in an electric fuel pump and eventually got fuel out the bleeder on the filter head. I still need a battery and haven't cranked the car yet. Sears seems to be my best bet for a battery locally, and they don't open till 1PM. I could buy an Optima at the parts store, but so far I haven't been able to talk myself into it. Do the Optimas cut down on terminal corrosion? They seem to be the choice for trunk mount applications, and I thought I read that corrosive gassing was either reduced or eliminated with them. Thoughts?

I got a battery and cranked it - without success so far. Cranking speed sounded really good. The replacement battery terminals need to be replaced themselves. The positive got pretty warm during cranking.

With a charged battery, I know some things that I didn't before.

1: The starter works.

2: The engine is free.

3: All 4 windows work.

4: The talking lady talks, but I can fix that.

5: The glow plug automation seems to work normally.

6: It sucks trying to do this far from home.

My gut tells me that the IP belt broke while the fuel level was real low, and it appeared to be out of fuel. The fuel filter looks new (off brand), but it was virtually dry till I hooked up the electric pump judging by how long it took to get fuel at the bleed screw. I need to check for 12 volts at the shutoff solenoid. I've seen some evidence of mouse activity under the hood, and I could have a chewed wire.

It has been an expensive, but productive day.

Optima yellow top battery 750 CCA, 2 new battery terminals, set of 2 gauge jumper cables, and small supplies.

After fixing the cable ends, I was able to crank without the connections heating.

No amount of cranking was getting me anywhere, so I went digging. I stopped digging when I found this.

All the cogs were sheared off at the crank. Exactly the failure that stranded Mom one night after work in the White car.

Yup, that's what happened to my '82 Wagon, 1k miles after I bought it, 86k miles on it, from the original owner, and why I put replacement of the IP Belt in the FAQ, Maintenance: IP Belt section.

Check the tensioner closely too, they are not as robust as I'd like, and I always replace them. No aftermarket source, see the FAQ link above for part No. and price.

The White and Blue cars both have new belts, but I didn't replace the tensioner in either. They both seemed smooth and tight at the time. I intend to replace this one and look seriously at what it will take to make a new axle that will allow bearing only replacements.
