Repair & Maintenance

Post by dieseldorf »

On my home return trip last year I noticed unusual high charging voltage, up to 16.2 Volts. I have installed a cheap three wire voltmeter (Ebay) on my dashboard, which is surprisingly accurate.
So I installed a spare alternator I had, complete with the vacuum pump. Replaced the copper seals on the oil line. There was a small oil leak where it bolts to the engine block. The charging voltage went down to normal, 13.8V. Obviously the voltage regulator went out. I might have damaged it myself. One time I connected a battery desulfator to the battery and forgot to disconnect it first from the vehicle. High voltage spikes may have damaged the internal voltage regulator. I located a new one at Rockauto, part # VR175.
I tried to use 10-30HD Rotella engine oil but oil consumption and leaks increased, so I went back to 15-40HD Delvac brand. Other than that, the van is ready for the next trip. This year I will make two shorter trips. One along the California, Oregon and Washington coast. Coming back through Idaho and Utah. The second trip Northern Arizona and Utah.
