yeah! i was thinking there was something wrong with my little p/u because of the consistent 28mpg but i guess it was just all the short trips and idling and all around town. so yes i'm very pleased.

Short trips, IDLING at elevated rpm, cooler weather, winterized fuels, colder intake air, more distance spent running in lower gears, old work-hardened tires, lower tire pressures are some of the things that will lower fuel mileage simply due to lower ambient temperatures.

Backwards fuel milage

#23

Post by TooManyIdeas »

Its weird I seem to get better milage around town than I do on the highway. Maybe I push the engine too hard to maintain the 70-75 MPH range at 6000 ft

But I also noticed that the date on the oil filter said November 2005 (only had the truck a few months not my fault) So I've decided to swap over to Royal Purple. Hopefully that will make things run a smige easier and get those numbers up at 30+ MPG where they belong

Oh yeah the truck rolled over to 100,000 miles on the drive home from work today Whoooo

There is no "maybe" about it. These 720 trucks are NOT geared for those speeds. With the 2WD, 3.88 final gears, and stock 14" wheels, 60 MPH is 2500 rpm. Your best mpg will be in the 45-55 mph range.

You should also read this post and the link therein. :^)

I'm a victim of the dreaded lead foot disease and I do believe it is terminal. I'm not a slow driver and I never will be. Gonna have to modify the truck hehehehe

That's what I said when I was younger. Then the reality of too many speeding tickets and insurance premiums that you wouldn't believe. I got tough: it took two years of constant vigilance, but I trained myself to drive the speed limit. It was hard.

I got my first speeding ticket in something like fourteen years, last month. I got caught in a group of speeders and didn't get moved over before he got me. I didn't argue, I just paid -- I'd saved enough over the years.

In spite of all these things, the little ol truck pulled off 38 mpg today on a causual (60 mph) round trip to San Diego. (runnin' a customized fuel)

For your approval:

Diesel in Orange County per US gallon: $2.98 (USD)

TWICE the mpg you get, Zen? Fewer piston rings equals less internal friction ... a special consideration for vehicle spec SD fours.

You might study Ford and Honda (in particular) who have over the past decade trended toward narrower and narrower rings (reduced friction) in persuit of higher fuel mileage. These narrower faced rings also exert a little less pressure against the cylinder wall which in turn prefer ligher grade oils (ie, 0w-20) to function correctly. Lighter weight oils in themselves reduce "viscous drag" which is yet another MPG robbing factor faced by vehicle spec engines.
