Timing Gear Removal on SD 22
I am in the process of rebuilding my SD 22. To remove the KiKi injection pump I need to remove the timing gear. The FSM specs a tool that I don't have. Is it possible to remove the timing gear with a three jaw gear puller?
No Worries Mate.

I don't see why not. I've used the "knock off" method twice on SD IPs. This is not just beat on it!
I would think any decent jaw puller would work. You will not be able to do all the work with the puller however; if you try to just tighten the pin to get the timer assy. off, it will only bend the assy. Instead, take up some pressure on the pin bolt, then rap sharply (not hard, but sharp) on the pin's bolt head. If you have sufficient pressure on the bolt, the taper will break free.
It's not seated with huge force.

Thanks Al, I will take it easy.
I had two of the 8 bolts on the oil cooler break at the head. I was able to use penetrating oil and vise grips to slowly work these out. I had read your post on the casting leak and lack of parts availability. This inspired me to be VERY careful getting the broken bolts removed. I have always subscribed to the adage "Act in haste, repent in leisure"
I picked up replacement heat-treated bolts at High Strength Fasteners in Kent WA on my way into work this afternoon.
I am taking photos of the process / progress of my rebuild, and hope to pull together a "what I did on my summer vacation" post.
Wish me luck!

Wow, the pressure is on . I am prepping the truck for painting, as I am at the mercy of the weather I had to hold on the re-assembly of the engine. I can finish the engine when the Pacific NW rains start.
By the way, I have my rocker arm cover nicely polished. What do you suggest for protection of the polished surface?
Hang in there, I will post on the project.

Ooh we love pictures, yes we do, don't we boys? Paint is what I will be doing to mine very soon.
I don't put anything on my aluminum other than the residue from the polish, but I live where it is a bit drier. You could clear coat (Duplicolor has a nice high temp one), but that may eventually get scratched up or peel and then you have to strip it all just to clean it up again. I think it's easier to just leave it bare and shine it up occasionally. Maybe finish with wax.

Absolutely can't get away with no coating up here in the Great Pacific NorthWet. Aluminum alloys corrode badly up here if not coated. Clearcoat will have to do.Knucklehead wrote:I don't put anything on my aluminum . . . I think it's easier to just leave it bare and shine it up occasionally.

Thanks for the feedback.
Sounds like powder coat would be the way to go. My concerns with "normal" paint would be adhesion.clear powdercoating works well and it doesn't fade or peel
Thanks for the feedback.
