SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Phil, where did you procure your liner/piston/ring sets, and what was the cost?

Do you know if they can be purchased on a "per cylinder" basis (ie one piston, one ring set, one liner)?

I got them from a place in New Zealand.....give me a day to find the info. Shipping was a killer, but his price was good enough to make it worth while..I think you could get one set, sounded like he had a bunch.

I got them from Bowden Engine Parts http://www.bowdenengineparts.co.nz email is conrodchris@quicksilver.net.nz Real nice guy, I talked to him on the phone to give him the credit card no. I think I paid around $400 for a set of four pistons w/pins, rings and liners with shipping. He doesn't show them on his website, but does (did) have some. The ones I got were name brand British (JE?) manufacture not Nissan. They showed evidence of long storage, e.g. there was some very light rust on the outsides of the liners where the cosmoline wasn't quite thick enough, but they were in their original packaging and cleaned up fine. 3 ring automotive type too. I checked every dimension at assembly time and all were nominal. Unfortunately I have had a hard drive crash since I bought them and the original visa bill is in a box in the attic so I am going from memory on the price but it's pretty close.

Arco Motor Industry Co., LTD (Taiwan) sells SD22 liner/piston/ring kits in both 3-ring and 5-ring versions, and can also supply LD28 liners -- but no LD28 belt tensioner, I asked.

I emailed them:
asavage wrote:Hello:

I am in the USA. I am an end-user/small business.

Do you sell to individuals (small orders)?

If so, to whom do I send an inquiry?

I am interested in single-unit pricing for:

* CLNI408301F SD22 5-ring

* Is the above item available as a single (liner/piston/ring) set (1),
as well as a full-engine set (4)? I have an application that requires
only two pistons/liners/ring sets.

* CLNI408301F SD22 3-ring

* CLNI608451P LD28

* Timing belt tensioner for LD28, Nissan part number 16805-V0700

Response (one business day!):
Arco wrote:Thank you very much for visiting our website and your inquiry.

Please refer to the attached PI-0701603.

1.) Note that SD22 (3 rings) and SD22 (5 rings) are using the same

quantity (we can also supply them in cylinders) .

2.) LD28 timing belt tensioner is not available for supply. Sorry.

3.) Please give me your telephone/fax number(s) for our record and

Awaiting your reply. Thank you.

I think I understand the pricing for the liners (four liners = US$32), but the pricing on the liner kits (liner/piston/rings) is harder to guess. Is "2SET" two liner/piston/ring assemblies? Looks to me, if I read this correctly, that a "set" of liner kits for all four cylinders is $104.

Plus freight, plus customs, insurance etc.

Al,

I was able to source pistons, rings, and liners from Nissan.

I tried the Bowden source but they did not have any more 3 ring pistons available. This was Jan 07

The price from Nissan online parts was:

12033-R8112 Ring set (4) for 3 ring piston 169.30
11012-76200 Liner (1) 81.80
12010-36W10 Piston Set 3 ring (1) 70.40

If the deal from Arco is as good as it appears I would be interested in odering spares myself.
No Worries Mate.

Does anyone care and verify the QUALITY of these low cost parts?

Could be like ball bearings. Sure they "look" the same but they sure are not the same quality (...as Al knows).

We've been through the "cheap" water pump problem too.

Anyone care to try one of the Chinese heads or rotor discs?

I'm thinking of getting two liner/piston/ring sets (five-ring) for the engine I took out of the "Vashon Truck" to turn it into a two-cylinder genset engine. Actually, the cylinders look OK on the remaining three cylinders already, but because we know that looks are deceiving on the SD, and because it is already apart, I'm thinking new bores & pistons. Of course, I could order four and turn it back into an SD22, but I don't have a need for one of those. For a genset, having more HP than you need just wastes fuel.

So I'm looking at options. Two liner/piston/ring sets seems pretty cheap. I need to pin her down on what we are talking about.

On quality: who knows? I will assume lesser quality until proven otherwise, but for this non-roadgoing engine, and as an experiment, I may buy the "cheap stuff" and try it.

Phillip,

Touché , I was glad to find the OEM parts. It was a long wait but the order for 4 liners/Pistons/Rings did finally arrive. It was about a two month wait.
Unlike the liners Galen used, mine are a press fit not a slip fit. I think the issue will become availability for OEM parts. In my hunt for a source for the liner/Piston/Ring was there are plenty of 5 ring pistons, the 3 ring piston was not to be found. I feel lucky to have sourced them from Nissan.

Your OEM pistons have genuine vehicle (high rpm) and design 3 ring pistons having the top ring STEEL carrier.

I have seen only one set of the 5 ring pistons (from a marine SD) ... and that photo is not good enough to see if they have steel carriers or not.

About pistons / ring carriers

We only supply these parts in engine sets, not in cylinders. So,
please confirm the quantities you want to order in order to quote you
the delivery charge.

P.S. LKNI408303F STD is at US$98.00/ set (4 pcs of the liners, pistons
+ pin, rings and pin bushings).

Awaiting your prompt reply. Thank you.

So this is where I am with ARCO now.

http://asavage.dyndns.org/ftp/Nissan/PI-0701603R.pdf

1 SET LKNI408301F STD SD22(5) 103.20
1 SET LKNI408303F STD SD22(3) 98.00

Shipping & insurance via DHL to Port Townsend = $190

I have verified that a "SET" is four of everything: four pistons, four liners, four sets of rings, four rod pin bushing: enough to do an engine. For $98 plus shipping.

I am ready to order one of each of these (one SD22 five ring, one SD22 three ring). I need half of the five ring set for my genset engine project for the "Vashon Truck" engine. I am going to stock the 3-ring set.

These are not OEM Nissan parts.

Does anyone want to get in on this order? The shipping will be cheaper the more I order -- amortized across many liner sets. Put another way: US$200 (+ a bit to get from here to you) for a set of 3-ring liners/pistons for the SD22, but non-Nissan parts. This will be an "at cost" deal for me.

Al S.
