This is gonna drive me nuts! 5 speed convo issues

ok so the 5 speed convo is almost done. I just need to know whats with the starter. 82 max. Factory LD28, trans from a 77 280. Neither starter engages the flywheel. Please throw me a bone! I cant figure this out.

If the original engine had an auto tranny, then the spacer that fits between the flex plate and the crank is most likely still on the end of the crank.

Pretty sure you have to use a diesel starter.
