Engine Swap Question

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Engine Swap Question

#1

Post by dieseljunky »

Hello. I would like some input. I found a 1986.5 Nissan Hardbody for sale. It is a 4x4 5 speed. Is it possible to swap the SD22 with the Z24? I know it can be done with the older models but not for sure about the hardbodys.

I have a complete SD22 engine and transmission. The '86.5 Nissan is for sale for $500.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

So you think the SD22 would not have enough power to satisfy for the 4x4? I figured it should have the same amount as the 4 cylinder gas engine, but I could be wrong.

Alot of people put the SD22 in the 720 4x4. The hardbody isn't that much heavier is it? The SD22 is the back up engine I have for now.

I've done it!!. SD-22 in 1986.5 hardbody. I'm working out right tire size for factory gears. Other solution is global transfer case.

what size tire are you trying?
what gears come stock in your truck?
I have a 720 truck i am going to put the SD22 engine in this summer i hope the truck has 31" tire now and 4:11 gears
I also have a set of 3:90 gears (front and rear)I did not know what would be better?
my 2WD diesel truck has 3:88 in it with stock tire (about 25" tires)

I'm running 28" tires they are to much for gears.
I'm using 3:88 gears. The lowest I could find in Nissan stock parts.
I would use 4:11 if I could find them. I found three solutions, going down to 25" tires, putting an atlas transfer case in, and/or turbocharging.

so would you do it again(put an SD 22 into a 4X4 truck)or would you put a nether type diesel engine in?
I have a 85 king cab 4X4 truck i am going to put a new SD22 engine in.
hope do do it this summer i have the engine mounts made up trans rebuilt transfer case ready I am working on the oil pan
i have 4:11 gears or 3:90 i can use. Running 31x10 tires now with the gas engine Z24 with Weber carburetor 32/36
what is your MPG on your 4X4?
I get 30 MPG on my 2WD truck.did not know what it will drop to in the 4X4
I will be using for a daily driver and when i go hunting on the back roads.

Of coarse I'd do it again.
I would make things easier on myself..
I would do it the way I had originality planned which did NOT involve an
86.5 hard body drive train.
I would put the lowest set you have in and be prepared to put an atlas transfer case in.
I was getting 38 to 40 mpg in 2wd now i get 28 mpg on good days.
It will work great for hunting
