No Start

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

No Start

Post by Zoltan »

Folks, I searched all the posts here, but no solution to my problem. Can you please help troubleshoot?

1. Got a new (rebuilt) starter. Battery ground is good, however when I turn the key, nothing happens. No click.

2. Ran a wire to the starter solenoid straight from the positive end of the battery --> starter turns over. So ground is good.

3. Checked ignition switch --> good.

According to the wiring diagram from the FSM, nothing should be between the ignition key and the solenoid.

So what's next ?
Am I missing something?

I'd like to localize the problem before I tear into the wiring harness.

aloha

Neutral safety switches for automatic transmissions and a clutch pedal depression switch on manuals would fumble the starter in that fashion

If all else fails, wire it through a relay powered by the switch.

same thing happened to me once... you need to check the fusible links ( small gauge wires connected to the positive battery terminal) disconnect your battery (negative first) then disconnect the black three prong connector from the positive terminal. follow those wires a little further down and theyll split off into two seperate connectors... disconnect those as well. you will now be holding the fusible link assembly in your hands. do a continuity test for each wire, if the one feeding your starter circuit is blown, that would keep your solenoid from getting power to engage the starter. napa might sell lengths of replacement fusible links in the different amp ratings, or if you have a good parts person at your local nissan dealer, they should be able to get you a genuine nissan replacement, but expect to pay about $35 or $40. if you have a nissan FSM, take a look at the wiring diagram in the back. find the battery, and trace the lines over to the right... it will show the fusible links. theyre drawn as boxes with an X through them but they look just like a bunch of normal wires under the hood. anyway thats how my 86 SD25 is set up. hope that helps and good luck!

Was it working before you put in the new starter or is this the reason you changed out the starter?
Hook a meter to the small wire that hooks to the solenoid and cycle the key to the start position. Do you get anything? If you do, then I would suggest that the contact in the solonoid is not right, try tapping it with someone holding the key in the start position. If no, then search that small wire back in the harness, or, remove the ignition switch and check for continuity on that wire. If you have continuity then that "Start" 'contact in the ignition switch is pooched. That would be where I would start. ( no pun intended  )
