new owner of a ld28 plus t..

hey guys..

i have just got my hands on a cheap 81 ford transit van,mk2 model..
someone has gone to alot of effort in fitting a ld28 and auto, and also have added a turbo,a alloy radiator and trans cooler...

...current warrant of fitness,and the registration has just expired,diesel tax is up to date aswell..

someone has also fitted a boost,oil pressure,volt gauges aswell as a diesel tacho...

the bad part is it was smoking like a train,little bit of blue smoke mixed in with a heap of dark grey/black smoke...


so i spent all day yesterday driving to pick it up and bring it home..

this morning i went out to have a good look at it as i brought it unseen..
it fired up real easy,with alot of black smoke..
took it for a small drive and i couldnt see behind me..

so i went back to the shed and wound the fuel back a whole turn, untill it stopped smoking anyway...
so now it only has a slight hint of blue smoke which i think would be the turbo seals...

but it also has alot of crank case pressure, theres a rubber hose coming off the rocker cover that blows alot of air, it has no odour and has no colour to it either...i will plumb this into a catch can at some stage...

it currently runs at 7psi...the power delivery feels quite strong through the 4 speed auto...

i brought this with the intention to use it to tow my racecar trailer and crew/tools etc..

the body is fairly sound,but needs a stereo and some paint work..

ill try and get some pics up for yas..

but anyway, does everyone agree that the blue smoke would be the turbo?and thoughts on the crank case pressure?blow by??

Good clean looking legal van you got there for a very good price nogrip. Well done, good score.

As far as blowby goes, check the condition of the vacuum hoses running off the vacuum pump on the alternator. An easy fix if one of these is leaking 'vacuum'.

has masses amounts of crank case pressure still..

pulled the exhaust off the turbo and she was dry as, the front side had a fair amount of oil inside aswell as the intake manifold..

so excessive blow by???

new motor?

There's a thread two on compression testing here. Ebay or similar sometimes has the tools for $100USD sometimes less. Source a head gasket before planning on any work.

With the right luck, maybe new rings would make it behave?

ive taken the turbo off, seems to be allright as there is no oil in the rear of it,and little play..

so i took the manifolds off and theres alot of oil inside the intake ports, the exhaust ports appear dry but very sooted up.

so im thinking its badly suffering from blow by..


is this right??

anyway i think ive located another motor locally,will find out at 7.30am tomorrow, fingers crossed..
will fit the turbo gear to it aswell i think...

That sounds likely. The intakes are "normal" - gotta clean them occasionally. Depending, it might be worth testing the compression - that could help tell how bad the thing is; since it starts, it's got to have _something_ for compresssion. If a ring is broken and you source a head gasket you might fix it with just a honing and new rings. Or you might find the lands are trashed and you need not pistons...

ive located another motor but its a rear sump,mines a front sump.

i assume theyr the same just need to swap sumps over and oil pick ups??

Check the dipstick location. Also vacuum pump oil return.

Sure would like to get my hands on that rear sump pan, oil pickup tube, screen and other related items to convert mine.......

Perhaps if you pick up that new motor you might be interested in a deal.
Just hope the shipping isn't too much.

There are no rear sump LD28's here.

There are however L24, L28 (gassers for the Z car) but they require some modifications

oh..thats quite a hike for a sump to go..

would obviously work out cheaper for you to make/modify one..

Sounds like a bad ring, to me. Throw some Risilone in that hog and crank up the smoke screw!
