Measuring fuel flow

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Measuring fuel flow

#1

Post by Dale »

I stumbled across this flow meter for $13 on futurlec: http://www.futurlec.com/FLOWFUEL30L0.shtml

I'm trying to work out if I need 1 or 2 of them and where to put them. How much fuel does the lift pump move, and roughly how much gets recirculated under various circumstances?

Why do you want them at all? Just curious...

To watch fuel consumption in real time.

I sure hope your not using 2.0- 30.0 l per minute...

That's per hour. Typo on the part of the website, if you read the datasheet it's per hour, and the tiny hose barbs suggest it as well I think.

Wowser, Howser, what a spread!
(2 to 30 Liters / Hr)
To convert that to American, I had to break-out a calculator.
(Jethro weren't here to cipher it for me.)
2L/Hr = 1.1267oz./min. (that's slightly over 2 Tablespoons) - boozers know a shot is only 1.5oz.
Divided by 4 cyl. means only .28oz./min each
, but . . .
30L/Hr = 16.9oz/min. (that's 1Pint + almost 2 Tablespoons)
Y'all realize that's flowing 4.22oz/min (over 1/2 cup) to only 1 cyl?
Little wonder black smoke rolls when the smoke screw is twisted.
If that tiny air inlet was bigger, could we turn-up the fuel flow to make some normally aspirated torque?
Or would acceleration suffer because of using the vast reservoirs power that are normally only used to get things moving?
Inquiring minds want to know this stuff.

Shalom!

No. Number two cause of damage to rings after air filter breaches is black (smoke) carbon from over injection/insufficient combustion air. A little more torque is realized from cranking up injection quantities past the smoke point, but the bad side effects are increased fuel consumption and ring damage.
