SD22 Headgasket replacement with Felpro.

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

SD22 Headgasket replacement with Felpro.

#1

Post by NeilPierce »

Greetings all.

I am looking at replacing the headgasket on an SD22. I have a new Felpro 8991B headgasket. It comes with a small packet of small, metal reenforced rubber rings. I do believe I have them placed correctly with only a couple of them being debatable.

Looking for anyone out there that could verify my placements of these or maybe supply me with a picture of correct placement.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Neil.

EDIT. contact elboss, he races a 720 and enjoys drifting. He has replaced a number of head gaskets.
If he has not chimed in by tomorrow, i will do a search and attach a link.

Well, respect to anyone who races a 720 pickup! I never would have actually thought of doing that. I can imagine headgaskets might be blown on a regular basis.

Thanks for checking out my thread and really appreciate any information you can share.

This is from elboss, a couple of his threads. He went through head gaskets because he turbo-ed the engine. You might want to PM him.

Shoot, wish more of the pictures would load.

I looked at his youtube videos where he is racing the truck. Very impressive.

Headgasket is done. Went absolutely perfectly. Couple hundred more kilometers and I'll re-torque the headbolts.

Thanks to all who helped and offered information.

For the record, the old headgasket was absolutely toast, and I do believe that the headbolts towards the back (tranny end) of the head were not sufficiently torqued. I think that a periodic re-torque of those bolts would be a good idea for pretty much anyone, regardless of whether your headgasket is blown or not. Just my 2 cents.
