newby 4l71 auto problems

Hi from New Zealand
Have a 1989 Ford Falcon Ute which was fitted with a 5 litre V8, anyway, the lack of horsepower and extreme fuel consumption had me rip out the boat anchor and install a s2 LD28 with a 4 speed auto trans and subaru vf-something turbo, problem I have is it feels like 2nd gear is slipping, if I adjust the kickdown I can get it to drive in 2nd but it wont select 3 or 4 gear, anyone shed some light?
Cheers Bill

It sounds to me like you have a transmission that needs to be overhauled, BUT, first check the pan filter; I suspect it will be well plugged and there will be massive amounts of contaminants in the bottom of the pan.

Going on from there if cleaning and fresh fluid doesn't fix anything, carry on by doing an oil pressure test and go from there. I suspect you'll find that the oil pressure will be very low in the forward gears when the hydraulic clutches are actuated.

Do pressure checks. Match them against book values. Make sure the speed governor that initiates up shifts is functioning properly. Oil pressure test should tell that; I am assuming that it is a mechanical speed based device running off the output shaft. Make also sure that the downshift ('Passing' gear) mechanism is set properly and releasing fully.

Found the problem and I didnt have a restrictor in the vac line coming from back of alternater so the vac dump valve couldnt dump the vac as fast as it was being supplied, happy as to have the old girl changing properly.
Now for testing :) I have just wound the fuel in till its running 14psi (max 5psi before) and have opened it to 110 mph, 2.92 rear and 295 60 15, auto doesn't hook lockup until 65mph and open the throttle at 65 mph to find 10psi boost so should be a good combo (hoping)
