Junkyard 1982 Diesel Maxima

I’ve posted here a few times asking for a spare IP, and I guess I’ll update you guys.

During my spare time I like to check junkyard websites (row52, LKQ, IpullUpull) to see if any cars pop up with parts I need. Struck gold when I saw a 82 Maxima Diesel listed on IPullUPull Fresno’s website! Couldn’t believe it. With these cars being 40 years old with many being killed for the crankshaft, I never would have thought I would find one somewhat close by. Fresno is a good 3 1/2 - 4 drive, which is very risky since you never know if the car you are after still has the parts you need. This was a risk I was willing to take.

I hope these pictures work, but after a long drive I made it to the yard. Crank was gone, but the IP with most of the NLA diesel parts were still there! Pulled the IP with the lines, alternator w/ vacuum pump, glow computer, drop resistor, glow relays, diesel fender badges, IP belt tensioner with hardware, and all 6 injectors. Would have grabbed more but I was low on funds (broke college student). Didn’t help that it was pouring rain!

Wasn’t prepared for how much of a PITA this pump was to remove! Lots of stuff in the way, and I needed to lift the motor to remove the engine mount bracket. With it in place there isn’t enough room to get the pump far enough from the block especially with the lines in place. Those lines are TIGHT and in a terrible spot, do not even try believe me. Now the engine mount bracket is a absolute nightmare due to the location of the top 14mm bolt. Nearly zero room to remove/loosen it. Had to take the oil filter housing off to get more leverage. I’m definitely pulling the motor when it’s time to do my IP, not fun when it’s in the car.

Only 140k miles on it. Identical copy of my car! 82, automatic, burgundy, grey interior, and slick top! What a shame…

I appreciate people still messaging me with leads to an IP! Glad to see this forum still somewhat active! Took this trip late February, I cannot guarantee the car is still there.

I hope everything works out for you, I have SD25 engines mostly, and parts can be a pain to find, a lot of my best parts were from other SD series owners, or others completely getting out of diesels.
I know the voices are not real,
but they have some really good ideas.

Ah, those pics take me back . . . I love JYs and have spent many a happy hour doing same as your recent trip. That Burgundy was very popular in 1982; my '82 Wagon was the same.

The LD28 IP in the Maxima is a nightmare to R&R or even time. Several special tools are required to do it the factory way.

I hope you got the IP belt idler. I can still re-brg them using the (50) stub shafts I had custom made around 15 years ago, but I have run out of good actual idler pulleys; the last few people who bought my rebuilds have failed to send my good cores.

Search on "IP Belt Tensioner" if this is new to you.

I did grab the belt tensioner and all the hardware off that Maxi. The bearing feels tired, but I recently got my hands on a good used one from a member here. Might be interested in having one of the refurbished.

I bought my 82 to swap it (no smog!), but decided to keep her diesel. Gotta have a collection of spares if I want to do so...
