Want To Buy SD-22 Diesel P/S pump, brackets, hoses

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Want To Buy SD-22 Diesel P/S pump, brackets, hoses

#1

Post by Russell-99701 »

Wanting to buy for my SD-22 Diesel Datsun engine; a complete, or in partial components, Power Steering pump, Reservoir, all Mounting Brackets, the high PSI supply hose-to-P/S gearbox with banjo fitting on it, possibly a needed item, dual or three row crankshaft pulley accommodating power steering drive belt. I prefer any-all fasteners, bolts, washers, etc., involved with the correct OEM fasteners reassembly back into my 1981 4x4 Datsun 720 truck build.

here's pics of how they look

What you are asking for is very rare, most 720 trucks with SD22 diesel did not have power steering, I have never seen an SD22 with this power steering package, I have seen SD25 engines with it that came from Canada, this package covers the injection pump controller and makes it very hard to fix if that component fails, it all has to be removed just to fix that part.

I have made power steering setups for my diesel engines using Datsun/Nissan 720 parts, I also used a D21 setup except I used 720 lines going to the power steering gear, it has a small pump and remote reservoir.

This pump/reservoir was from a 720 with a Z24 engine, I had to make everything to mount the pump/reservoir, just giving you ideas, where are you located?

I'm in Fairbanks, Alaska
Yup -I've thought about the gasser 720 pumps as you pictured, but don't own a welder yet for doing bracket fabbing, I've ran a few 720 4x4 gassers over the years and like their compact design with the pump having the tank integrated. My truck has the 4x4 power steering gearbox, and the supply/return lines from the factory already with it.

I think some of the 1980's Maxima's came with these SD-22 engines, have to look that up, I'm just getting started sorting out all [ 5 SD trucks, 2x2's ] my SD stuff a month ago, been collecting for years for this truck build.

Had a shop blend the bottom half sump of a 4x4 oil pan with the top half SD bolt pattern, ready to go. I opened the box with the P/S pump and realized how little I had of what it was going to take if I went with the original SD set up -

Took me about six weeks to pull the donor SD truck's engine out, clean it up, pull the recipient 4x4 truck out of the woods, get it cleaned up, get registration and tags, go thru all my boxes from the other trucks, pick out and pull out a COMPLETE, full combined saddle brown, interior set of panels and trim, that wasn't chipped and cracked, pulled from the donor trucks, then get the recipient truck into my crowded small garage, sort out every nut and bolt into organizer bins, from all the boxes and boxes of equipment, got a new windshield in the box, new in box carpet, new condition nissan bucket seats. The next thing is to get this P/S issue sorted out, I just yesterday found the new pics of the OEM SD set up.

I would definitely consider using the newer style pump, I know I have one in storage, but the brackets are an issue for me, unless I use the OEM SD set up, which could be un-obtainium, so I'm hanging my shingle out there.

thanks

If I were you I would figure out how to make a Nissan Hardbody(D21) pump with a remote reservoir work, that is what I did in my 1969 Datsun 521 kingcab SD25 turbodiesel I made, I am very limited for room in that engine compartment, everything is crammed in there, no room for anything else, I was able to mount the reservoir back close to the firewall on the passenger side.

There is a Nissan car with a pump/reservoir connected together that is very compact, but Fairbanks Alaska is not like a place that has a lot of wrecking yards with a selection of Nissan vehicles to get parts from, but Nissan made a lot of Nissan Hardbody trucks(D21), I figured out how to integrate the Hardbody power steering pump into the 720 power steering lines that lead to the steering gear, I do not remember all the details, but I made a mount bracket to mount the pump to that plate on the passenger side of the engine, all needed was a grinder with a cutting disc and a drill, the spot I mounted it to is located on the front cover just in front of where the injection pump is mounted, it has 4 bolts, as I recall a ground wire is connected to that area.

That remote pump is likely your best choice if you do not like the Z24 pump/reservoir, I do not recall if I needed the 3-groove crankshaft pulley(probably do need it, makes things easier), I do not recall if I needed that on all my power steering installs, I put power steering on all my trucks.

Recently my pressure side hose going to the steering gear got a leak and 720s are not that abundant around here anymore, I went to "Hydraulics Inc" and had them put a new hose on my existing line, it works great once I got it installed, that was a pain considering I did not remove the radiator, I do not regret going that way because starting over from scratch takes time, finding the parts I need, I am too old for that stuff anymore.

wow that turbo is exactly what I need, been pondering that for years, how to build one right the 1st time, never put a turbo on any engine before. thanks for the info on the d-21 P/S set up, luckily I have a handful of d-21's -one that has that power steering stuff stored inside it, I may turn out to need it, i have a lead on a complete SD-22 OEM set up, I just sent an email to him if he still has it for sale fingers crossed

could I please get an idea of what parts you used for the turbo and maybe pics of the exhaust manifold routing, I have some spare sd-22 exhaust manifolds, if i need to cut one up for it, i have no idea of which turbo to use, or how to make the air intake plenum work with it correctly.

I watch alot of utube videos, -will it run- and so on while in the shop working, i do understand turbo theory and all that but haven't seen anything exact about this application this would be a good time to work it out while the engine is easy access to do what it takes

i found an all original sd-22 2x2 720 in a truckers yard, he called me when he retired, i had looked it over and even started it up -always maintained with oil changes untouched except a new water pump, its in my garage right now on a engine stand next to the 4x4 720 it'll go into when i get the rust free cab insulated 1st, and the engine mounts figured out, already have a custom oil pan test-fitted in chassis, made and ready to bolt on

thanks for contacting me

OK, I have helped someone put together a SD22 turbocharger setup, he supplied the turbocharger, I have no idea what it came from, he did not get even close of as good a result as I got, but I have an SD25 engine.

It is likely your SD22 has only 3 main bearings, my SD25 has 5 main bearings, and from what I understand which I cannot remember where I read it, all SD25 engines came with turbo pistons, I am not saying you cannot get SD22 turbo pistons, but they are rare, the SD33 in the international Scout had a turbocharged engine with an injection pump setup on it made for the turbocharger, which I believe can be transferred onto the SD22 injection pump, that said there are SD22 engines with 5 main bearings, I have never seen one and I have not been looking either.

I never read about a successful turbo charged Sd22 engine without special things added on, like a vacuum pump and another thing that appeared to be very complicated to me to make everything work, in the end when you turbocharge these engines both vacuum lines that go to the injection pump need to see the same boost, this way the venturi still works properly that controls the injection pump, the biggest mistake I see when people turbocharge their SD22 engine is venting the vent line, that vent line needs to see the same boost as the other vacuum line that goes to the other line.

This is what I used to turbocharge my SD25 engine, I am saying right now I got very lucky on the used turbocharger I found at the wrecking yard, it is perfect for the SD25 diesel engine, the turbocharger came out of a 1985/86 Subaru XT, these are very rare and hard to find, it took me 10 years to find another used one, I found it on Ebay, they are low RPM turbochargers for a 1900cc engine, perfect for the SD25 engine, I likely went from 71hp to 120hp, this truck will keep up with a Z24 720 engine in the 720 when getting on the freeway, after 65mph/70mph it walks away from the Z24 720 engine and pulls steady to redline which is 4000rpms for my diesel engine, I have never went over redline, I have a diesel tach installed.

In this thread I posted a link to below on page 4 I show some of the setups I mocked up, but I weld, my 521 exhaust manifold was cut and a base was installed between number 1 and 2 cylinders, one has to know how to weld cast metal to do that, this is why I put the link to my thread about the other 1980 Datsun 720 SD25 turbocharged diesel truck, it has a lot of torque(I think the injection pump was turned up to supply more fuel), but it does not act like my 521 engine, that one is different, a joy to drive.

All I can do is answer questions the best I can if you ask me questions, I hope you get the diesel power steering package you are looking for, it is very compact but, hard to deal with if the injection pump controller fails, you need every part in that package.

Like I said I weld, welding is required when making turbocharger piping, you cannot buy what you need, you have to pay someone to do it if you cannot weld, and the result may not be what you were hoping for, the SD22 is rated at 61hp, you will never get the result I got from my SD25 engine.
