WTB Diesel Maxima sedan

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

WTB Diesel Maxima sedan

#1

Post by pezfallout »

I'm searching for a diesel Maxima sedan to have as a daily driver. I love these vehicles but have yet to find one (or any diesel Nissan/Datsun) in the south east.

Vehicle must be:

1) In good running condition, needing little (nothing internal) or no engine work.
2) In physically good shape with very little/no rust.
3) Manual transmission

I'm willing to ship the vehicle if it is a great specimen.

Thanks in advance!

Let me know if you find any that don't live up to what you want. I might want it. Welcome to the board.

Will do. Thanks for the welcome. :)

This seems to be one of the hardest, and most disappointing, vehicle searches I've had to do. I'm still upset about losing the Patrol, lol.

There aren't nearly as many 5-spd Maximas still running around as there are AT-equipped ones. Surprisingly, there were at least two Wagons that sold down in your area (FL) within the last 18 mos. that were low-mileage rigs, one of which sold for about $5k. Both AT, both Wagons IIRC.

Member Syra had a 5-spd Sedan for sale in Spokane in June. It meets your "Sedan" and "5-spd" criteria, but not your "looks good" and "runs good" criteria.

Yeah, so? You don't get the whole story unless you start at post #387.

I guess the reality of things is that if it doesn't run great, or at all, then it just can't be something catastrophic that I will have trouble sourcing parts for, and the same for looks. Also, if push comes to shove, I'll simply have to swap a 5-speed behind it.

These are just my "wish" requirements. :)

I would take a pretty one with mechanical issues over the reverse; the electrics are complex and sometimes difficult to work with. Rust is a serious issue in some areas, they rust in several areas easily, and of course the cracked door panel issue is pervasive.

The 5-spd swap is only practical (from a non-hobbiest standpoint) if you have a donor 5-spd vehicle.

I would agree with Al, it's better to have a good chassis/body, the mechanicals can always be resolved but body / paint work is expensive anymore, at least for good results.

After further searching and reading and seeing how truely rare and hard to come by these vehicles are, especially my criteria, I'm now broadening my search.

Looking for:

ANY LD28 equipped parts vehicle (AT/ or M/T)

I've decided that if I can't find a 5-speed 1st gen then I will take an LD28 and place it into a 280ZX M/T and go from there.

Search here on that idea. The disesel engines were equipped with trannies that had stronger bearings. The bearings on the gas engines are not as strong. See Al's thread in the sd forum on rebuilding the 5-speed from a 720. The main bearing went out and ate the box (IIRC).

Actually, no. The diesel engines have more torque than the gassers and tend to grenade the pre-86 front bearings. The guts are the same on the gasser and diesel versions of the FS5W71 transmissions, excepting minor ratio differences.

The thread you're thinking of is this one, where I repaired a 720 diesel trans that had grenaded by swapping in a gasser transmission's guts.

Was not the change to larger bearings on the input or counter shaft made irrespective of engine about '85? I recall you documenting this bearing and shaft change.

There's only a few ft/lbs torque difference between SD22 and Z22 engines but a considerable HP difference.

True, but the SD22 spends more time at that nearly-same torque peak than does the Z22; also, the same trans is used behind the L24e and LD28. With the same guts and brgs.
