sorry, it should have read "modify the transmission crossmember" not the mount.

Another benefit of this swap are the short throw shifters out there for the sx transmission/C box.

It will work. If you look in the FSM you will find that the diesel 5spd has a lower first gear. (less smoke starting out)

1982 maxima transmission overhaul cont

I just got back from the shop and saw the transmission inside. It seems that the mechanic took the easy way out and replaced2berings all the others just had some play.I ordered synchros bearings and all gaskets frome driveline.com.The gears looked like new My mechanic said they virtually had no wear.Hopefully the rebuild will make this transmission quiet again. He was very assertive that the transmission would operate perfectly. Wow its amazing how people underestimate these vehicles by there age and looks.

I could not believe the cleaniness and condition of this transmission there were no metal shavings at all.

Let me know what you guys think.

A transmission guru I know recommends the nissan syncrhos.

Here's his write up of the break down and build up of the nissan 5 spd.

I think that 275k miles is a pretty good service life for a sedan transmission.

I hope mine makes it that far.

Good luck with the rebuild, I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Just recieved my Maxima with the overhauled 5 speed. The car runs and sounds like new what a diffrence, an incredible smoothness. However i an traveling on a 900 mile roadtrip as we speak and the only thing i have noticed very minimal is a chatter in neutral that ges away when you press the clutch. What is the best recommended gear oil including the expensive ones to help alleviate this noise. Also as far as I can remember with my Max It has always had this chatter I am more into it now beacause i am working on he tranny. Can it be normal?

Bad countershaft bearings.

4th gear doesn't drive through the countershaft.

The "cages" that keep the balls spaced may have also hurt other bearings on the mainshaft.

I've tried mineral hypoid and gear oils, both mineral and synthetic in a 720 pickup truck which shares most of your transmission. Redline MT-90 is my choice overall. The "neutral/clutch out" chatter is simply loose fitting input and cluster gears. Won't hurt anything. But if you choose a heavier viscosity to lessen the "chatter", you will find shifting quickly (particularly 1-2) will suffer. Also, using any "hypoid" oil makes quick shifts more "notchy." MT-90 is a GL3/4 oil and NON hypoid.

I have heard this chatter for years I am noticing more beacause of the transmission issue (overhaul) Do you recommend opening the transmission again to tighting whats loose? Why would the transmission guy overlook this If he mentioned beforehand that the chatter would go away. He said it was the bearings.Anyway the transmission feels like new and i am very satisfied with the outcome chatter stars when engine warms up after about 30 minutes. I also lowered the idle so its a little more noticable. It does sound like engine clatter anyway. Just got back 900 miles roadtrip 85plus crusing mph wow what a car.....

There is nothing to "tighten up" via an adjustment. It's normal gear wear / mating. That the "chatter" becomes evident after a short period of time is a reflection of normal oil thinning and transmission case expansion (growth) due to heat.

It's normal.

Is that the one with the 85 mph speed limit?
