SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Thanks for the pics Al - That's what I was hoping to see.
So those go on *after* the filter....

Will any of the units in the pics here work on a datsun?

They're large. I think you'd have a tough time fitting one under the bonnet.

I did use these when driving semi/trucks. Back in late 1980's ... those International 9670 cabovers with Cummins 315 were awful.

Clay, I was at the JY today, walked the entire GM section and found one diesel, it was a 6.2l in a C30 (1T 2WD PU), similar to this one . . .

. . . and it was mostly there, so I bought the intake muffler for $9.50 . If you want it to play with, I'll ship it to you. Comes with the GM mounting bracket, so you've got somthing to bend and fold and mount with.

Thanks for snagging that Al!

If you think there is a reasonable chance it will fit I'd love to play around with it... maybe you could give me the dimensions first?

You can guess. And you'd be correct.

Back to the topic . Last week I replaced the exhaust pass-thru "muffler" for a new, conventional muffler (some new gas car). ALSO, reinstalled the OEM paper filter / canister (I had to goop up cracks in the rubber hose).

Much less exhaust booming bark across torque peak rpm with 1/2+ throttle.

SAME about of intake sound. It used to be howl only above 3,000 rpm with WOT. Now with the canister ... there's a hollowing honk anytime when the WOT is so.

Still top engine power. Same MPG

I don't know how you got that to me so fast Al, but the intake muffler arrived on Thursday. Thanks!

Now all I need to know is, which end is which?

Above, the end with the hose attached is the intake end. The other end (without the hose) goes to the air filter inlet.

Below, the hose is missing, but you can ID the angled round-to-round adapter as the same as above:

I didn't take a picture, but if you look in the air filter end, you'll also see some slots to the outer chamber, IIRC.

Alright, so I used some PVC tubing attachments and found I was able to hide the intake muffler in the wheel well above the left tire. It made a difference, but not as dramatic as I was hoping it would be. Plus, due to the length of the muffler, the sound source is now closer to the cab of the truck. So I think I have two options at this point:

1) Build a 'sound proof' box for the end of the intake. Basically, this would be a box made of sheet metal, with baffles, and sealed in an inch of sound deadening material. I think this would make a pretty big difference.

2) Take the intake somewhere else. And by somewhere else I mean somewhere behind the cab, where the sound will go out the back end instead of my ears. I have a feeling this idea is going to be knocked out, but I might just try it anyway. What if I continued piping from the wheel well back to where the spare tire is, following the exhaust tubing (but far enough away to avoid heat issues), and ending it in with the intake muffler and maybe even a sound-proof box?
A few obvious problems a) length of the tubing adds resistance to air-flow and b) driving on dirt roads would cost a lot of air filters...

Comments would be much appreciated.

How about porting it up (from underneath) thru a front corner of the bed and up to a semi truck-like canister? Away from the dirt and dust and still behind you.
