It’s stock as near as I can tell and it spent the majority of its life out west. It does have some typical scout-rust as it was in New York for aprox 2 years. The frame is excellent and it starts and runs well. I personally put on a new intake/exhaust manifold gasket, a new shutdown cable, and a new starter solenoid. I have just changed the oil+filter (16 quarts!), and tranny fluid and put a new tranny filter in. The alternator looks newer and the engine has been replaced sometime in the past with the same type engine. I wanted to do a full restore but I have no time anymore. Like to see it go to a good home. Everything but the AC works (cept for maybe some dash lights etc..)
The differentials are both dana 44’s and the tranny is the torqueflight 727 automatic. The transfer case is a dana 20. It has a 2" tow ball on the back. The tires are 30x9.50R15LT stock size, you can go to 31X10.5 with no mods, if you are the offroading type. Plus, if you like to go offroad, diesel fuel injection makes the engines run at extreme hill angles.
Engine will run on SVO BioDiesel vegdiesel #2 home heating oil, or (I think) kerosene. I have never done this. These Diesel Scouts were great for economy, getting 20 mpg in the city and up to 30 mpg on the highway. Not bad for an SUV.
The hard-top has never been removed. The AC pump looks like a York pump unit (great for onboard air) and all the factory AC parts are there. I think all the chrome parts are in the back. Floorboards I think are stock and fairly solid, there is more rust by the doors. New service manual for the vehicle and a new service manual for the engine, plus a box of spare parts. I’ll throw in a catalog from super scout specialists too, GREAT place for ANY part for these and helpful too.
Great info/research on these at binderbulletin.org
Not a SD33T (turbo), it is a Nissan SD33 naturally aspirated which is great for the bio-diesel / VegiDiesel / Straight vegtable oil idea, plus no high temp dangers that you get with turbos and it's easier to work on and less to fail you. International put the Nissan engines in these and built them with Chrysler. This engine is supposed to be in this scout. This is not a rigged up diesel conversion. This engine is also in the Nissan Patrol and some industrial forklifts. Stock dual fuel filters.
This has the legendary 727 torqueflite automatic transmission which was used in many jeeps and cars. There are many jeep people who love these scouts for parts, I thought about pulling the engine and putting it in my CJ7. But sadly the CJ-7 has to go too.
It does have a plug in 110VAC block heater and it keeps it nice and warm in the winter. The gas-tank has been either replaced or re-lined I forget what the previous owner said, but it doesn't leak. The previous owner said something about having had the springs and front end worked on and they look newer, it had the heavy duty springs option put on at the factory too. You may be able to put even bigger tires with these springs.
It has good tread on the tires and would make an excellent winter vehicle. I would have confidence to hop in and head out to anywhere right now, with some basic tools in the back. However that's me. I ordered a lineset ticket (basically a factory window sticker) about 6 months ago and it hasn’t come in yet. I’ll send it if it does.
It should pass the NYS inspection other than maybe the emergency brake which I have not pushed in a year, it may work fine but I never got around to working on the brakes and was waiting till then. No emissions check on a diesel either. The muffler could use a re-clamping or replacing.
I have spare seats and a spare transmission and maybe a spare transfer case that I would also sell, if not I'll list them separately. I was going to make this into a great project, maybe even do a frame-off restoration. It deserves it, being as nice as it is. These scouts are notorious for the rust you see and actually this one looks nice for being in upstate New York. Clean title.
