1983 Nissan/Datsun 4x4 Gas to Diesel Throttle Body issue
Hello, I have converted this truck from gas to the SD22 and hope to have it running better with the turbo and intercooler. I need help on the throttle body issue. I have read these forums inside and out but still have no clear knowledge about the TB problems....to keep...or toss...etc. I have it located after the intercooler just like factory on the intake. I have pics and will try to figure out how to share them on this site......I need help....
Also when I rev it up it puffs white smoke 1st then dark grey to black smoke until you let off? is this good?
And, I am only measuring 2 psi of boost after the intercooler, I think I should have lots more from what I have read?

Hi Chuck
Sounds like you're coming out of the back stretch on this project. Good going.
I'm afraid my experience is very limited with turbos, but... I think you will need to explain in a lot more detail for anybody to hazard a guess on the boost problem. My first thought is to check for large leaks in the plumbing, then test for boost at different locations to see if you're losing it somewhere particular. Also put a vacuum gauge on the turbo intake, see if there's a restriction there. One obvious suspect is the throttle body...

Is your wastegate stuck open? Does it have a blow off valve (bov) What is the turbo set up off of? Welcome to Nissan Diesel. How is the wiring going? I found 1984 sd truck that I am going to look at this weekend so I may have a wire harness if your still interested. Your name on ratsun is firemedic right. If not well don't I feel stupid.

> Thanks, I'll try that and see what I am getting......meanwhile I am trying to locate my temperature sending unit wiring from the Z motor...any ideas?...I have a cluster on the passenger side but don't know which ones they are?
Hi Chuck
I'm replying on the forum since it helps to keep the rest of the crowd in the loop - believe me, you're gonna need mo/betta advice than just from me!
Not sure what you mean about the temp sender... You trying to patch parts in from a Z motor?

Yeah, the Z motor had the Alt. and Starter on the passenger side and the SD motor is the opposite. So, all my wiring is on the opposite side and I am having trouble locating what goes to the alt and what wires go to the temp indicator for the gauges.

Ok, I cannot find any linkage on the new turbo I have. I have been told it is internal wastegated. So, how do I know for sure what I have the liteerature from where I bought it is vague and the down pipe connection on the back of the turbo has two holes and I can see the turbine on the primary port and it is open on the second port but nothing visible? And there is no acutater arm or anything attached?
I will take it off and look closely for something......but is there such thing as one without a wastegate?

Here is some of what I have done for those who want to see. I am currently attempting to change out turbos. I apparently got the wrong one need more psi at lower rpms.....I will post as I go....

This website apparently says they use the GT25 Garrett or similar for the installation but they want 3,000 something dollars and that just does not fit my pocket book so I am buying the Godspeed GT25 off of ebay......it should work the same from what I have read.

gasser turbos do not spool correctly on diesel engines usually..
over on the VW board, people are running GT22 turbos on their built up (over 250 hp) TDI engines..
and an SD22 sure isnt gonna flow as much as a built TDI spinning 6500 rpms..
i would look for a K14 turbo off a VW diesel, or some other sort of small turbo off a similarly sized engine. K24 would also work good..
i have a GT17 on my 1.6 VW, but its off a TDI. a GT17 off a gasser would yield dismal results on my engine. i know a guy who tried getting a GT15 gasser turbo to work right on his diesel, and it just wouldnt do it. the exhaust housing is usually a smaller number than the intake housing..
how a gasser turbo would be .48 on the hotside, and .42 on the coldside, a diesel turbo is the exact opposite, .42 on the hotside, and .48 on the hot side.
does that explain a little better as to why gasser turbos are not as well suited for a diesel engine?
