Split lock washers are useless (says NASA, 1990)

So they're useless? Since 1990? But they're still ubiquitous! What's everybody supposed to use now?

There are lots of lockwashers that work. Toothed, serrated face, locknuts (mechanical (taper thread, deformed thread) & nylock), jam nuts ("double nut").
