As a side note, does anyone have information about the E4N71B transmission, used in 84-89 300zx and others? I assume it's a variation on the older L4N71B? I see that it was also used in some 200SX models in 87 and 88 alongside the L4N71B trans.

I just thought i add this.I fitted a 910 LD20T with a LD28 L4N71B .

nissan laurel ,cedric LD28 use L4N71B.mid 80,s.these are hydrolic controled lockups.governor pressure V line pressure.so at 50 mph in overdrive you get lock up.this is common on early V6 nissans.totally uselees for long distance towing when you need 4th.
R30 skyline,C31/C32 laurel some had these around 1984.
skyline R31 has RD28 with electric controled lockup and overdrive.it has a basic power shift idea that uses the kickdown.[re bottom..some other nissans had the LD28 with the electric control.2 types of these the cancel sollinoid is on the bell housing.the common type has a small hole drilled into the 4th gear release circuit, when overdrive is happening there is no pressure so the lockup control valve moves so you get lock up within seconds of going into 4th.unless the cancel solinoid dumps the oil on the other end of the valve.the overdrive system works the same.when you have the trans apart you see different size holes and some missing this is all to do with timing shifts.
.late model RD28 use full electronic trans.no good.unless you can reprogram.

in a light body it was no problem.the stall speed is very low.I then fitted it to a larger skyline wagon with 4.11 axle ratio.just useless.raised the ratio to 3.45 no good.I then used a 4N71B from a CA20E powed R31. no lockup.swaped the 3 speed valvebody to get the shift points and the extream oil pressure needed.use the diesel vac modulator.i didnt swap the governor as a was lazy.

the ca20 has a soft shift [2nd] band.i recomend using a non dampend servo.the engine would revup then slur into gears.like a single speed.this is how they work.

using the 3 speed valvebody gives no overdrive control.the system works by dumping oil to get 4th.the valvebody phisicaly dont cover the 4th port.so to get normal gears you have to apply power[earth] to the cancel solinoid.some trans have a switch on the outside in the 4thgear circuit no oil pressure the light comes on to warn you of overdriver.this is usefull for operating a elecric lock up tourque convertor.

this gives a 6 speed 2 reverse.i didnt bother to fix this just used the od cancel switch on the gearstick.[early nissans have a switch on the console/dash].i had the 4speed valve body in it at one time but prefered to split shifts, the car often kickdown too early.you could use a pressure switch on the governor pressure line,or a speed sencor pulse.

some simple lock ups cancel with brake lights, trottle idle/full throttle.
some nissans lockup in 3rd but i woudnt bother.use the 4th switch and a micro switch on the trottle.the system uses very high vac but i had a switch of something that worked about half throttle.late nissans use a tps it is possible to fit one to the injector pump, then wire up a nissan auto controller.these need water temp speed pulse.these are all different.
my jap import r31 hangs onto gear untill full throttle, the local model is quite sporty.these controllers are very different regarding lockups.

re ELN471B it just a normal box, with switches on the shift valve to notify the controller what gear it is in.it then works out a shift pattern using the kick down..so at low throttles ot will feel sporty.the power shift can de switched by moving the pedal quickly,it stays like that until you idle back.. it also controls lockup and can cancel overdrive.there is also an oil temp swicth to allow the warmup and cancel overdrive when hot.

OD automatic

#34

Post by sawyer335 » 13 years ago

Have owned four or so Maxima Diesels, and one was an 83 automatic wagon. Just stock, had about 150,000 on it when I bought it. The OD worked fine, seem to remember it shifted out of OD by turning out the light. It never slipped or had trouble, but was gutless up the hills in OD. I guess it was gutless regardless, but I really liked it!!

Averaged 35-40 MPG with it on the coast of Oregon/Washington. Sold it to a newspaper delivery man three years ago. He was driving it last I knew. Had around 300,000 on it.

Joel

Hello, Sawyer, welcome to our site!

35+ MPG . . . I can only dream of that kind of mileage in my '82 Wagon. I'm hoping just to break 30 MPG with the '83.

Things that make you go "Hmmmmm . . . ."

eBay Mazda MPV L4N71B.

I wonder if one can swap in a bellhousing from a 3N71B or L3N71B or L4N71B and fit this trans behind an LD or L2x.

Here's another pic of a 1983 gasser L4N71B. Dale pulled this one last Saturday.

Image

The OD section is pretty easy to see in this pic, as is the OD band servo. Compare to this poor pic of a 3N71B (which externally looks identical to the L3N71B):

Dale's writeup is in this thread.

Here's a pic of the shifter I used in my zxt. It came from an '88 maxima which I shortened and dremeled out the shift plate to accept the square shifte lever.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/ ... ftm005.jpg

The OD switch is located in the handle. With 12 volts applied the OD is off. I tapped into the cigarette lighter for the 12 volt source.

If you tow something keep the OD switched off.

The 4 spd auto from the mitsubishi can work, but you need the bellhuosing from the maxima for it to work. Along with the pump, depending on the year the 4 spd came out of.

E4N71B

Post by fud2468 » 13 years ago

I didn't need it , but at 50 cents the price was right, just got a pristine 1984 300ZX service manual from a rummage sale.
It says it has the E4N71B in the non-turbo and the 4N71B in the turbo.
It also says the E4N71B locks up in all 4 forward gears.
I wonder if the earlier trannies can be made to lock up in all 4, seems like it would be an advantage.

The E4N71B are electric, the 4N71B are dumb transmissions. I have a dumb transmission with a lock up torque converter in my 280zx turbo. It had been rebuilt to mitsubishi turbo specifications. Extra clutch for 2nd gear, valve body mod drilled for firmer shifts.

Hello, dlh:

Welcome to our sandbox!

Do you have a Gen1 Maxima or Nissan diesel? If so, tell us about it in the "User's Rigs" forum.

If you're comfortable with it, consider modifying your Profile to include where y'all are . . . can help sometimes when the topic involves geography. You can modify your Profile after logging in by selecting the "Profile" button at the top of any page.

Great idea! It looks handier on the knob than on the console. I think I'll want to have the OD indicator on the dash eventually.

The photo is great. Can you keep it 600 pixels wide or less on the posted one? You can link to larger, of course, but if it's wider than about 600 pixels, we get this problem and some folks have to scroll the thread sideways.

You can edit your post at any time after logging in, just use the "Edit" button at the top of the post.
The OD switch is located in the handle. With 12 volts applied the OD is off.
I've often wondered about that. The FSM does call it an OD Cancel Solenoid in the trans.
If you tow something keep the OD switched off.
That's the conventional advice, but I'm able to tow easily in OD with my Aero. The main thing to avoid is towing with the torque converter unlocked, which heats up the trans fluid fast!
The 4 spd auto from the mitsubishi can work, but you need the bellhuosing from the maxima for it to work. Along with the pump, depending on the year the 4 spd came out of.
That's good info . . . how did you learn this?
fud2468 wrote:I wonder if the earlier trannies can be made to lock up in all 4, seems like it would be an advantage.
I doubt it, and even if you could, you'd need to recal the valve bodies to regain proper shift speed and pressure. The open converter softens shifts, and locking it requires different valve pressures or you'd get booted in the butt on every shift.

Al S.

The lock up torque converter locks up after certain rpms of the drive shaft, It isn't electric lock up. I think close to or after 40 mph.

I'm one of the z car cannibals I have been reading about in this forum. (have 1 diesel crank from a maxima for a stroker motor in my 240)
There is a write up on zcar.com telling about the 4 spd auto swap into the s30(240z, 260z, 280z) and s130(280zx). While researching for my 4 spd auto swap into my 280zx turbo I saw information between 2 of the other members talking about the pump and different year 4 spd autos.
