If they are following you, I'm SURE they are saying "If he'd just push the pedal down a little further ... "

Or you might do like I have. Get a 2x8" decal made saying "DIESEL" and stick it somewhere above the bumper ... like it's a factory decal. That seems to get the message conveyed that you're nearly on the floor now!.

I've also got a bumper sticker that says:

"I got over the hill so ... what do I get?"

Well some probably do wish I'd push the pedal down further, but I stay in the right lane and out of the way on the freeway.

I have thought about a "Diesel" decal but just haven't gotten it done yet.

My rationale is based on the fact that I hate to pay out money on tickets, and that I need to get a pretty decent mpg. Also, I'm just not in that much of a rush, and the little bit of time people might save pushing it another 5 mph is often never realized, at least on the short 110 mile trips I generally make.

I'll have to get me several of those bumper stickers!

that's all - from the frozen wasteland that Iowa has become!

Doesen't work with a good SD22, they don't smoke, but both my LD28s smoke like demons from hell -- it's embarrassing. Back when I was driving the '82 a lot, tailgaters got a good taste of soot when I'd get annoyed: drop it to 2nd and floor it, couldn't see a thing in the rear view. Three seconds of that . . . no more tailgater!

Childish, I know. I really want to get my LD28s to smoke less. But I'm starting with mousetraps on the floor.

Al S.

Al, I've done this same exact thing with my car since I've owned it and when it calls for doing it to a tailgater I say, "I'm going to smoke out this person." The act, as I like to call it is "The Smoke Out." And the people that get it done to them deserve it in a lot of ways. I remember one time my two friends and I went out one night in my car driving around and I layed it out on at least 8-10 people in their cars. It sure was hilarious and each time I did it my one friend who was sitting in the back seat turned his head to look out the rear window and every time the cloud of smoke was nuts. It wouldn't clear up until you were a 1/4 mile down the road after accelerating in that time. The LD28 and auto trans really allows you to have some fun. Before I owned my car my dad had a 1981 Datsun 810 diesel (the first year) and he smoked out people all the time in it. And at that time I was a little younger like let's say 14 or 15 years old. So I guess you could say I got turned on about it pretty early. Haha  Even though it is childish you have to look at in the case that you aren't driving a car that's a powerhouse, so you need a way you can ward off tailgaters that are getting on your nerves. There is no doubt that the Maxima diesel probably ranks #1 on the list for exhausting out the most black smoke out of any other passenger diesel vehicle.

The "Diesel" sticker cost me $3.50 at a local sign shop for 2. The bumper sticker I found at a rice racer store. LOL

82 Maxi 5sp ld28 N/A 38-32 mpg highway

Post by blueeagle »

I have a stock 82 maxi sedan that gets me 38 mpg @65 mph on the level empty rolling on summer 185/75r14's pumped up to 45psi, pulling a loaded little lawnmower trailer I get about 32 mpg.

Fuel mileage tip of the day, DONT BY NEW TIRES, half life used tires get you better fuel mileage and are easier on the pocket book. Reason is the tires are broke in and more supple, and the thinner tread has less hystresis.

For a real good book get yourself a copy of "performance with economy"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/ ... 93-9786463

It is petrol centric but diesels are just perfected and optomised petrol grandchildren!

50 mpg in a max D

I love my max D I use it like a truck, in fact it has better power with economy than my 84 Nissan z24 720 pickup.

I have taken my max D cross country doing 10,000 miles in one month pulling a loaded trailer and averaged 33 mpg at 60, LOADED! Empty my 5sp max D at 60-65 reliably gets me 40 mpg on the highway, I regularly round trip 600 miles on a tank.

Mixing a little vegi oil into this new LSD diesel will improve its lubricity and your fuel mileage, I run about 20% svo to get best fuel mileage.
1981 Diesel Maxima 5 speed rescured complete from bone yard for $300
power windows, locks, mirrors, and Cruise control still working.
Title search reviled I am the 2nd owner.....
600 miles to the tank at 60 mph
Best fuel mileage with 80% ULSD and 20% SVO

Your Sig indicates you have an 81; do you own more than one?

That's pretty incredible. Nobody else with an LD28 has seen that kind of mileage.
. . . I regularly round trip 600 miles on a tank.
Now, that's not so unusual. With the L3N71b (no OD) and a smaller tank than the Sedans, my '82 Wagon can go a maximum of about ~470 miles if the tank is brimmed. I had a nozzle malfunction at a fuelling station two weeks ago, and fuel was running all over the pavement before someone noticed and shut it off (this was a Shell station). So it was definitely full and I drove it about 480 mi. but it was very near real empty by that time. The Sedans, as noted, carry more fuel than the Wagons. And your '81 has overdrive, because it's MT. (Gen1 diesel Wagons were never offered with MT, at least in the US.)

But 40 MPG? Hmmm.
Mixing a little vegi oil into this new LSD diesel will improve its lubricity . . .
Can you take a few minutes and find me a link to a non-anecdotal source for this? Biodiesel, yes, it has much more lubricity (at operating temps) than LSD and ULSD. But VO? I'm really interested if it's been tested.
and your fuel mileage, I run about 20% svo to get best fuel mileage.
VO has less BTUs per unit volume than petrodiesel. Many folks have noted reduced fuel economy when running VO or BD, over PD. This is leaving aside VO's other issues. I am not a fan, just to state my bias up front.
