Sourcing starter parts? Or buy a new one?

Discuss (and cuss) the Nissan LD-series OHC Six diesel engine, popularly available in the US in 1981-83 Datsun/Nissan Maxima Sedans & Wagons.

Sourcing starter parts? Or buy a new one?

My starter appears to have given up the ghost. Problems similar to this post: http://nissandiesel.dyndns.org/viewtopic.php?t=1830. My Dad told me it sounds like it needs bendix springs, or the starter drive (clutch) is doing out, but the motor sounds fine... It will turn the engine over for about .5-1 second and then disengage the flexplate, and spin (whir).

Napa quoted me $136 + core for a new starter... Is there somewhere I can buy the parts to fix it myself? It appears to be a Hitachi Gear Reduction type starter... Any difference between the GR starter used on the late 280zx cars?

You need the diesel starter, assuming you are talking about your LD28.

A good local auto electrical shop might be able to rebuild your starter. I've had local guys rebuild the starter on my Perkins diesel. They even got a new armature.
